Residents of the Buhene district of Goma in the Democratic Republic of the Congo returned to their homes on Sunday after Mount Nyiragongo erupted the night before, sending many fleeing the area.
Some people found their homes in tatters, with rocks scattered in parts and some lava still glowing in areas.
The lava that erupted passed through the outskirts of the city of Goma, but stopped short of hitting the populous city but people still expressed frustration over the little warning they say they received before the eruption.

You're right, the city of Goma and its 670 000 residents should pack up and move a bit further away.

@@Der.Preusse Well, for a start, their govt should discourage people from populating that area further. But I have a hunch that no one will actually do anything about it after the volcano calms down. The opposite will happen, the city will grow until the next disaster strikes.

@@abigailroberts7943 The real answer lies on the soil. Some cities and hamlets around the world (even in Europe) also growing in a very2 close proximity with an active volcano as well simply because the soil around an active volcano naturally the best for agriculture + sand/stone mining + herding livestocks + plantations. Not to mention another extra bonus such as natural hot springs.

But on every slopes on an active volcano the world offer the best and the most fertile land that were very2 suitable for agriculture, plantations, or simply for herding livestock eventough sometimes lava, ashfall, sulphur gas, or pyroclastic clouds claims lives when it erupted. And the hot springs that were appeared from those volcanoes also present as another attractive point for anyone to reside nearby. I'm pretty sure Italians, Hawaiians, Indonesians, Philipines, Japanese, and people from many other countries that had lots of volcanoes in their countries will give similar answer if you ask them why they keep reside on the slope of an active volcano eventough their volcanoes sometimes kill hundreds or thousands of people everytime their volcanoes are on their major eruption events.

@@ignatiusryd2031 That's not how it works! it's not minutes/hours, but months/years... For example, the Campi Flegrei volcano in Italy has been showing signs of eruption for about 60 years. Should they evacuate Naples every day because of that? It is impossible to predict exactly (or even roughly) when a volcano will erupt.
@ignatiusryd2031

@@nic12344 Unfortunately, that's how it works. I myself living near an active volcano, less than 30 kilometer away, right on the path where pyroclastic cloud (and refugees) will passing trough if another major eruption happened. And from our experience usually some days and hours before a major eruption happened the volcano already gave a very2 undeniable warnings such as rapid deformation (inflation), endless strong rumbling and strong tremors, etc. Of course everytime that thing happened the volcanologist that were stationed around the volcano will rise the alert status and before it reach the highest level they will order the most vulnerable people to evacuate all at once from the most dangerous zones that most likely will be buried under the lava/pyroclastic cloud before letting the rest of the people evacuate when the status is rised to the highest level, which usually happened when an major eruption is dangerously become imminent.
