Its a character flaw. I'm not saying its bad writing, its just an aspect of his character, because he is still a kid. He can't see shades of Grey and like I said, his value of what is good is based purely on what is useful to him and his friends. So saying Gon only kills for a good reason is a bit odd to say in this instance. He might have a reason, but his concept of "good" is selfish.

I think the main reason is his personality. He is childlike ( well he is a child), but from what I watched (chimera arc) he is impulsive and can easily ignore his surroundings. Faced with a calculating opponent could spell trouble for him. He is strong and can easily surpass anyone, but like his father he is selfish.

Killua's godspeed can surpass the enemy's reaction time to beat the up, and Gon in adult form had a really good reaction dodging the first Pitou's attack, so Gon would beat him if he had a little faster reaction time, and Killua would beat him too, because Gon wouldn't be able to equal to the speed Killua is, so therefore, it has 50% Killua wins or 50% Gon wins, or it's gonna be a tie :p IMO

I honestly think killua as a character is more interesting than gone. Gon really only has the fact that his father left him as a child, and he his in now on a journey to find him going for him. Killua, was raised by a family of assassins, force to suppress all feeling or unnecessary luxuries his parent did not believe would help him, including having friends and his sister. If he disobeys, he gets punished. In addition, his sister, the only family member he was locked up for a long time because she was seen as a threat, until they found out they could control her through killua, where illumi proceeded to restraint the two of them. Then the worst part is the fact that from a young age, illumi has beem physically and psychologically brainwashing killua, and he had to struggle through that brainwashing for years.

Zeno never said that Killua's potential is leading the family. Killua's family seems to want him to be their heir, because according to them, he's the most fit child for that role. In other words, they believe that Killua has the most potential TO LEAD THE FAMILY, not in every thing in life. There are 5 Zoldyck children: Illumi, Killua, Alluka, Milluki and Kalluto. Illumi isn't fit to be the heir because he is too manipulative, and was said to be straying even from a path of an assassin. Alluka isn't fit because she is too difficult to control, according to Silva. Milluki doesn't seem to possess the physical capabilities or even a mind to be the head of the family, so he isn't fit to be the heir, either. Kalluto didn't have that much focus and screen time in the story, so i don't know what makes the Zoldycks not consider him fit to be the heir, but maybe it's his lack of independence - always being near another family member and trying to find his brother in the chimera ant arc. Which leaves only Killua, who isn't as manipulative as Illumi, who has great physical capabilities and mind, unlike Milluki, who isn't a wish granting device that kills people like Alluka does, and who is independent, unlike Kalluto.

think about this. gon didn't have some sort of powerup, it was stright up anger and rage imagine if he trained with his dad, got his nen back (i am pretty sure he can) and was able to control when he turns into an adult, he would be so much more powerful than any other character. gon is honestly so underrated and one of the best anime protagonist to ever exist. He is NO WHERE CLOSE to being the typical 100% moral anime hero and i love it.
