Hi Pink-they use scrub brooms how. They make the rock go further and straighter-honest.

slapping the ice with a corn broom causes some heat which melts a tiny bit of the top of the ice, basically causing hydroplaning. sweeping is much more effective with modern brooms, where pressure and friction are applied.

back in the day, outdoors, they swept off the snow and ice and sticks and leaves and stuff. Ah. The good old days.

Man, I hate how some 60s movies tried to imitate silent films and failed miserably.

they weren't imitating silent films. This is a silent film. Then they added sound. 1963 there was still plenty of silent film cameras. Just color was expensive!

Some places actually werent all that cold because artificial ice refrigeration was a thing due to hockey! But, in smaller towns, you wouldn't exactly have the infrastructure to have proper insulation so it was still damn cold lol
