Very interesting take. I do not completely agree that Amy's looking for the perfect relationship, though - The way I saw it she was actually one of the characters who was aware of how fake everything was and decided to consciously be part of the deception - Because she's basically a psychopath - but with the hope of trying to actually achieve something real by playing the game. This can be partially drawn from the flashbacks - Everything is romanticized, even the dialog, to the point that it feels unnatural but close to what we (the audience) and the characters are used to. Everything in her life, including her childhood, was staged. By finding out about the cheating, she brings out the real Nick and by executing her revenge plan she tells Nick about her real self. By the end, she actually succeeds in her goal, because they now about each other and are not part of the deception anymore.

Great video, but I reckon it's a wild misinterpretation of the ending - Gone Girl is a perverse romantic satire, about two people who fall apart because they're both relying on pretence alone to make it work, only to finally reveal their true selves and come to realise they make a great team, that playing to the facade is part of who they are, and what they love about each other. I feel like men tend to get hung up on the horror of Affleck's character being manipulated, and miss the part where he's a bit of a sociopath too.

It was a very interesting movie. One thing I noticed once she came back. They stopped bullshitting each other. She was right that he could not settle for normal girl. He went along with it, rather easy. In a very dark way she rekindled his interest with her. She understood what he wanted and she made sure he understands what she wanted. Of course blackmail is not a way to have relationship. Or is it? Can anyone here admit that they never used emotional leverages on their partners? We sure like our idealised view on relationships. Advised by doctors, movies etc. Problem is none of that bullshit ever survives in reality.

Back to the Future actually uses its product placement in an interesting and non-distracting way too: to show the passage of time and how things have changed from generation to generation. They even make a small joke with it (The Pepsi Free and Tab exchange) that is overt and subtle at the same time.

this was an interesting take on this story. I think i have constantly seen this from a 100% feminist view because it is inspired on the true murder of Lacey Peterson. Knowing her story and being a woman myself I found myself sympathizing with amy up till the end. Yes clearly she is a sociopath but I related so much with the "cool girl" concept and within the book in general we see a much more interesting way in which the characters truly mutually destroy each other.

I don't like happy endings as they feel dishonest. I do not like downer notes as well but can appreciate them better than pure happy endings. The endings that seem to appeal to me are bittersweet endings or ambiguous endings. What I like about bittersweet endings the most is they give you hope but they also remind you the world is moving forward, things will not be as they were and you may have to pay a steep price; another words, life is full of entropy but it keeps fighting because it's life. As for ambiguous endings remind us life will always have mysteries that may never be solved.

It seems like this entire movie could have been avoided if the couple were just more honest and open with each other from the get go rather than trying to fake their way through their relationship and marriage. Many, MANY problems could have been avoided that way,

There are a lot of “identity” themes in the movie, particularly in the case for Amy and the “cool girl” trope that a lot of women play. It’s basically a cautionary tale of what happens when you’re not honest with yourself and your partner.

This was a really good interpretation of the film. It also makes me believe, as this was my interpretation of the film upon first viewing, that Amy fell in love with the idea of being the "perfect girl in a perfect marriage with a perfect man" instead of actually loving Nick. The illusion, idea and qualities of "perfect Nick" fit nicely for Amy and that's what draw her to him instead of being his honest real self. The same could be said for Nick, but at least he was never conditioned to believe and craft the illusion in the long run. And it's when Nick's infidelity, wasteful money habits and parts of himself he held back from Amy began to show, did not fit with her worldview, so she concocted a revenge story. Amy is obsessed with maintaining an image and narrative about herself and her life that she could go to dangerous criminal acts to maintain the illusion. She loves it more than she does Nick, and poor Nick has to unfortunately stay in a lie with a sociopath, because that is what she is.

Am I the only one that thinks this film is a bit of mysoginistic propaganda? The false accusation towards the husband, the police and media turning against him, the false rape accusations to the "white knight", the fact that the decission of the wife has no sense?
@rainmirron4 жыл бұрын
Literally, the few redeemable people in this film were Margo (faithful twin sister), Detective Rhonda Boney (she didn't trust Amy's story & wanted to question her further), & Tanner Bolt (the lawyer who rightfully believed Nick). Two out of three were women. So, no it wasn't misogynistic propaganda. Even the male detective said some insensitive crap like they should burn down an old mall simply because homeless people have nowhere else to stay. Just because they made Amy a scarier villain doesn't mean Nick was a saint. He wasn't even portrayed that way in the media & in "real life". He was a cheating manipulative liar who looked down on the poor (he was quick to be suspicious of homeless people for his wife's disappearance even though nothing was taken). Although he took responsibility for his behavior by asking "what have WE done to each other", that doesn't magically make up for the pain he caused. He's both a monster & a victim of his choices. I think the movie demonstrates that pretty well.

I'd have to disagree with your assertion that the Narrator's lying to himself about his disenfranchisement. I got the vibe that he's fully aware of his lifestyle, and it's that which leaves him to rebel against society through Tyler.
@MrHootiedean9 жыл бұрын
A nice take on Gone Girl and Fincher. I didn't care for the film. I thought the story was sloppy and that it showed its hand far too soon for its excessive running time. Amy came off crazy the second she opened her mouth and especially when Pike's obvious narration started that just oozed with cotton-candied malevolence. Also the scene where Affleck goes into the house and screams her name in horror killed the mystery for me. But as you discussed in your analysis the merit in the film lies in its commentary on relationships which I found more entertaining as Amy is nucking futs and Affleck's character is ultimately too dumb to care and how a lot of couples with that dynamic carry out that madness until death does them part, hating every minute of it. And that makes me lol. Lastly, the scene early on with the dog being in two locations at once is just sloppy. Fincher is better than that. Anyway, always enjoy your reviews.
@Wawagirl177 жыл бұрын
"Also the scene where Affleck goes into the house and screams her name in horror killed the mystery for me." Okay, that's...a really good point. I do really like this movie, but damn, how ARE we supposed to think he might have killed her after that? I never realized how that does ruin it. Hmm.
@OpqHMg3 жыл бұрын
Yeah i also thought this was movie was sloppy and just absurdly obvious and had no good twists. It was embarrassing to watch and Ben Affleck was just too dumb to take seriously. It was just sexist tropes showing up in the worst way masquerading as profound commentary. David Fincher Thinks he can get away with nonsense because his movies look good. The aesthetic is everything in his films sometimes. Apparently he's right because the audience fills the blanks with things he never bothered to put in there

"everyone is a damaged terrified monster" No, David, they aren't. It may make you feel better to collapse into the idea that everyone is as perverted as you, but it's not true. What was it Yami said? "You use underhanded methods so you assume your opponents do too". It's an assumption and don't even pretend it's not a judgement call.

I was so confused by the adoration of this movie by critics. It's reasonably well constructed but to what end? I don't care about any of the characters or the plot and it didn't provide any new insight or interesting themes.

+joshthegrave Well that's just it. YOU didn't care, but the critics and most of the viewing audience did. I personally cared about the male lead, even though I despise cheaters, he didn't deserve all of that! It was a fascinating look into a sociopath's mind and few movies can pull off an unreliable narrator for so long. Plus the mystery aspect was intriguing and even when the truth did come out about her fate, I still was on the edge of my seat waiting to see how it would all play out. Pus you gotta admit, showing it to someone else for the first time is pretty hilarious due to the face they make when the twist is revealed. I know my mom's eyes were particularly glued to mine when the twist came up since she saw the movie before me.
@joshthegrave9 жыл бұрын
My mother guessed the "twist" almost immediately, as did everyone I know. It all felt predictable and bland. I don't think it pulled off an unreliable narrator and the "look into a sociopath's mind" was just standard or generic. Like I said, no new insight, for me at least. I've seen a lot of movies though. The moment Amy spoke I thought, "Oh so she's framing him. He's cheating or something." Plus the characters felt like actors reading lines the whole time to me. I never saw them as real or got invested in their journey. So bland predictable plot and "characters" that I don't care about. There was nothing left for me after that.
