Tim Richmond owes the late Debbie Putman (died of AIDS related complications in 1992), the late Karen Beasey (died of AIDS related complications in 1992) and well as LaGena Lookabill Greene (still alive with HIV and well, with current medications) an apology. They were all of his victims of Tim Richmond, because he did not disclose his HIV status, which he was diagnosed in 1986. Smh.

I think HMS would look somewhat different today if Tim Richmond had lived and could race out his entire career. Being teammates with Jeff Gordon, and likely Jimmie Jonhson. I don't think we'd see the success of someone like Jerry Nadeau or Brian Vickers in the Cup Series as maybe Tim Richmond would have that 4th seat. Just judging by a similar career in that time period: Mark Martin. Mark Martin started racing for Roush in the late 80's and he drove for Jack up until the end of the 2006 Season, and he was competitive. And someone like Tim Richmond who had just as much if not MORE talent, I could definitely see him being HMS's elder-statesman going into the 2000's, providing he didn't switch teams. I could also maybe see Dale Sr. suckering him into driving the #1 Pennzoil car, too.

I grew up in Ashland. I met him when I was a kid while he was still running Indy Car. He was definitely a big deal in Ashland. They had this huge parade for him after he got ROY at the 1980 Indy 500. He signed autographs for hours at the band shelter at Brookside Park. I was there. He was a pretty awesome dude. Great with his fans. He never forgot them or where he came from. I was gutted when he died. He got me interested in racing. I always hoped he would return to the Indy 500. I think he could have won it after his success in NASCAR. Indy Car and F1 are my favorite series.

An old co-worker told me they were friends. She told me he was literally everything you heard he was. A ladies man, a racer through and through. And a good friend. When she talked of him, you could see something in her eyes that was different than when she talked about other drivers. She was good friends with Kenny Schrader too . And she let me know, other people called him Ken, but he was Kenny around her. But something about Tim, you could tell was different. She said there was nothing there romantically. They were just really good friends. I could pick her brain about drivers forever. I miss her. She was a good coworker/friend

First time I ever saw Tim Richmond was in the mid 70s in a supermodified at Sandusky Speedway. He was wild! But when they finally got the car handling he was damn fast! He started late compared to most of his contemporaries. A true racing talent lost too soon.

This is a great piece, I don't even think the ESPN special mentioned all of his accomplishments those few years. I think personally it's because of Tim that HMS took a gamble on Larson, but that may just be me. What it would have been to see Tim and Davey battling it out with Dale Sr and Jarret, Alan and maybe even a young Jeff Gordon. I got a feeling the championship numbers for all those guys would have looked very different.

I can actually pinpoint the exact peak of Tim Richmond's career. It last from May 25th to September 7th, 1986. In that time, the NASCAR Winston Cup Series held twelve races. Richmond won six of them and finished second four times. He was 118 points behind Dale Earnhardt by the end of that stretch which in those days was roughly the difference between 1st and 35th. Sadly, he only had one top ten finish in the next five races. By the time he ended the 1986 season with a fourth place finish and a win, it was already over. I don't know if Richmond's collapse in those five races was the result of AIDS setting in, but I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case.

34 is pretty young, if truth you could say he really died at 32 because that is when his life stopped. He went to his parents house, put his racing gear in the chair and went to the back room and never really came out again.

@@paulo9504 I don't know man it just felt weird. All the buildings look old, short, and boxy. You could tell the town was past it's prime. There is a very odd red bridge you have to cross to get to the town. I think I was on my way to Bristol when I went past ashland. Not a very good town I guess.

I got into NASCAR literally when he was getting out. I went to my first race at Richmond in the late 1980s, so I may have got to see him there, although I am not certain. But his story always fascinated me because of the enormous "what-if" potential. If he had gotten AIDS just a decade or so later, he may have had a chance at survival (look at Magic Johnson). Or if he had never got it, the potential battles with Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon in the 1990s would have been awesome, especially with Richmond and Gordon on the same team (although if he had lived, that may not have been the case.) Its just one of those sad twists of history I guess.

"Days of Thunder" was a remake of 1959's first NASCAR movie "Thunder in Carolina" with modern characters like Richmond adapted in.

Tim Richmond had a good run in dirt & pavement Sprint Cars & Super Modifieds, as well as oval & road course Super Vees, on his way up to Indy Cars.
