In this clip, Scarlett keeps saying "The Yankees are coming" like a wind-up jack-in-the box. In the final edited scene, I think she only says that line once, and when Melanie says the line about taking her baby if she dies, Scarlett replies: "Fiddle-de-de, Mellie. Arent things bad enough without you talking about death and dying. I'll have Prissy go get Dr. Meade." I think that's how it goes, or pretty close to it.

Here's a fact: the first edit of GWTW was 5:15.. Several more edits got it down to just under 4 hours. If they still existed, a directors cut might add a full hour plus of deleted scenes...If anyone has a time machine, please go back and pick up the scenes that literally ended up on the cutting room floor. Thanks. Oh yeah, tell Lincoln not to go to the theater..

It shows how different Melanie and Scarlett saw things; Scarlett saw the facts of reality and Melanie was a lot less distracted about the Yankees, worrying more about her child. I think it's funny how Scarlett burst into the room and looked at the laboring Melanie like she just couldn't believe that Melanie was so ready to pop. Scarlett looked like a little kid bursting in on someone doing something naughty.

I think the reason why they had her repating that line is because she just discovered the very harsh sick that has shoved itself in the spokes of her escape plan. She's terrified, nervous, tired and starved and Prissy is absolutely worthless. I'd be dumbfounded too.

In the movie Scarlett doesn't repeat the line over & over. Either it was looped or she repeated it so they had several takes to choose from. But the Yankees were coming, they came & burned Atlanta to the ground, burning women & children out of their homes (after the military had evacuated & surrendered the city). What Sherman did would be considered a war crime today (Actually it was considered a war crime then, but only by the losers). Winners get to write the history & name the heroes.

This is not a deleted scene! it`s fake! its editted... the scene is in the movie as you see up to the point where she says"the yankees are comming" then Melanie has her speech an the scene continues from that point on. Whoever made this copy pasted Scarlet`s "yankees are comming" to make it look slightly different. PLUS! the movie is based on a best seller of the time, no way they didnt know how to end a scene!

Actually this looks like a discarded early take of the revised scene actually used, with Scarlett’s repetitive “But the Yankees are coming!” whittled down to just once.

Country people can be Aristocrats. Scarlett being a country girl doesnt mean she is less educated. The landed gentry had private tutors. Scarlett's personality was more bold than Melanie. But that was personality not lack of education.

Well done on making the footage 'look' like it had been stored away for years and had picked up lotts of surface scratches and negative damage -with the added bonus of a 'noisy' optical soundtrack (No doubt being caused by the wear and tear on this rare surviving footage) :)

In casting GWTW leads, the producers were concerned that Vivien Leigh would be "too British" to play Scarlett. Yet Olivia deHavilland and Leslie Howard, who played Melanie and Ashley Wilkes, were British. Likely the concern was the need that the relatively uneducated girl Scarlett epitomize the voice of a vigorous, strong Southern American rural girl of that day, whereas Melanie and Ashley were to sound more educated and leisurely old-$ Southern aristocrats. But esp. here VL & OD sound perfect.

this is not a deleted scene...but the lines "but the yankees are coming" are not repeated so often! In my beta, vhs and dvd, Scarlett says this only one time...maybe it is an edited scene...so many "but the yankees are coming!".

I can and DO assure you that most school no longer have any grammar books, and that they have lumped everything into a glut called Language Arts. Every year I have kids begging to be taught grammar, as they realise they can't spell, use punctuation or know parts of speech or the function of parts of speech. What was done years ago to history and geography and economics - lumping into Social Studies is being done to grammar. Most kids can't find their state on a no name map of the USA!

I did watch the movie up into this part and I know she's having a baby. I specifically recall why Scarlett sent the maid out for a doctor and I understand that giving birth to babies is dangerous.
