The ending of the film is soooo frustrating and breaks my heart. Two people deeply in love with each other but afraid to tell each other, and themselves, how they truly feel. Two incredibly independent people dedicated to each other but too stubborn to admit that they want to rely on and commit to each other. This scene is gut wrenching, literally makes a pit in my stomach.

He's heartbroken here and scarlett's also crying out for him, to be by her side, but neither knows what the other feels. She smiled at him when he returned home it showed she welcomed him and the pregnancy and was willing to start over, but his aloof manner hurt her pride, and she retracted her emotions. The war really hardened her heart, unfortunately. If only one person was brave enough to lay their heart out to the other, the dynamics would've changed, but ego is a curse and destroyed many homes. Rhett did offer an olive branch when she was recovering, but she was too stubborn to fight for their marriage, and bonnie's death was the final nail in the coffin

He goes white but then says "Who's the happy father? Ashley?" She retorts that he knows damn well it's his baby and that she wishes it was anyone's baby but his. That's when he says "Cheer up, maybe you'll have a miscarriage." The subtext here is that he's implying that he hopes the pregnancy kills her, which I'm sure you'll agree is a horrible thing to say. (And as it turns out in the very next scene, it nearly does kill her.) This exchange is important because it marks the end of their relationship. If only Scarlett and Rhett didn’t underestimate Melanie’s intelligence: she saw the truth that “Scarlett loves you a great deal more than she knows”. It would be blind idealism if she had not said “more than she knows”. I think she better understood these two people than they understood each other. Their pride got in the way of wanting to admit they loved each other. If only Rhett had shared Melanie’s optimism and not given up on her at the end. She never believed the gossip because she knew Scarlett did not love her husband despite what anybody said. I think Scarlett had enough love for Melanie as she got older and she started to see her core values did not align with Ashley’s. She was a gentle soul but incredibly perceptive. And Rest In Peace Olivia DeHavilland ❤

I think Vivien Leigh, as many have already stated, was born for the part! As Selznick wrote in 1941, “ I took one look and knew that she was right - at least as far as her appearance went… Later on, her test, made under George Cukor‘s brilliant direction, showed that she could act the part right down to the ground.” Of the other well-known actresses who are high in the running at what time or another, Margaret Sullivan, Miriam Hopkins, Joan Crawford, Norma Shearer, Loretta Young, Katherine Hepburn, Paulette Goddard, Jean Arthur, and Joan Bennett. Paulette Goddard was a very strong possibility, but she couldn’t produce a license proving that she and Charlie Chaplin were married. Selznick was afraid of negative public opinions, since she and Chaplin had been living together for sometime. And for that reason, Vivien Leigh signed a contract to play the role. It was on the night of December 10, 1938 That Vivien Leigh met Selznick for the first time at the controlled burning of the Atlanta set on the RKO Pathé lot. (Sad day for King Kong fans)

Melanie is the best character in the movie. She shows unconditional kindness to those around her, and openly communicates with people who don’t communicate with each other, like Rhett and Scarlett, trying to help and fix whatever she can. Even when she senses Scarlett is in love with her husband, she doesn’t resent Scarlett at all; she understands that feelings cannot be helped. She sees the good in both Scarlett and Rhett. It’s only after her death that everything falls apart; she was the glue keeping it all together. And I love how Rhett treats her with genuine respect. I do think that Rhett eventually felt genuinely guilty for hurting her. He is a Byronic Hero after all. Objectively, he’s not a very good person on the whole, but not a sociopath either. He has a conscience that nags at him for being an asshole to Scarlett when it has negative consequences to her emotional/physical health. However, for the most part, I don’t really think that there was much genuine love between Scarlett and Rhett. At first, I think he was attracted to the fact that Scarlett happened to be an ambitious, determined, and independent self-starter and fighter when it came to surviving and getting what she needed to support herself and her family financially, which was so unlike the average polished and submissive housewife that most women of her background, time period, and upbringing grew up to become. More than anything I think he fell in love with the challenge of trying to win her over. The longer she didn’t, the more abusive and self-loathing he became, and it eventually got to a point where the thrill of the chase wore off. Similarly, Scarlett starts to fall for Rhett when she realizes she can’t just easily have him. After Melanie dies, she loses interest in Ashley because she realizes she can have him easily, and now she misses Melanie’s friendship that she never fully appreciated until the end. That’s a major theme in Scarlett’s story. She always wants what she can’t have. She doesn’t appreciate much of what she does have until she loses them.

@@chihirokashima Yes. I've read the book. I think Victor Fleming made Scarlett a little bit too harsh. I think in the book they were more equal. And something else that bothers me about Rhett: if he didn't know why Melanie loved Scarlett, why didn't he ask her? I can think of a few reasons right off the bat: 1) Scarlett was the only one who stayed with Melanie in Atlanta when everyone else fled just as fast as they could go. I don't care if she promised Ashley or not, the fact is that she stayed. 2) Scarlett delivered Melanie's baby-- by herself. 3) Scarlett got Melanie to Tara & kept her & her baby alive. If it hadn't been for Scarlett, everyone at Tara would've starved to death. Seems like Rhett always focused on Scarlett's bad traits & not the good. And if he respected Melanie as he claimed, why in the hell did he leave her stranded on the road to Tara as well as Scarlett? Eloquent scene. Beautifully played by Miss De Havilland and Mr. Gable.
