Gongs have to be the greatest instrument to ever grace the drumming world.

Ah, I forgot another album that drummers interested in percussion may be interested in: "Max Roach with the Boston Percussion Ensemble" from 1958. A drums and percussion centric album that is a fun, experimental departure for Max at that time.

Thank you so much for this video! I'm so happy to see some gong learning videos from the orchestral and drumset perspective rather than the sound healing people who seem to make most of the videos about gongs. I have fallen in love with bronze cymbals and I think playing a large gong would bring me joy

All the album covers I remember seeing back in my grandparents house came flooding back into my brainpan when you started playing. All the '50s Space Age and Exotica albums. Enoch Light & His Orchestra, Yma Sumac, Les Baxter, Nelson Riddle, Sauter-Finegan, and Russell Garcia. I had to return to my Clyde Borly and His Percussions "Music In 5 Dimensions" album almost immediately. Can't recommend that one enough. That is a heck of a gong collection you have there. Very informative and inspirational, as always!

That's the same set up I had with my mamas pots and pans! Lol. I wonder how many drummers actually started that way. Beautiful tones!

cool overview of various gongs and mallets...it would freak me out to use a chain on any of these though

A smooth chain will not scratch or damage the gongs in any way. Just use a light gauge.

I have always wondered how people like Bill Buford or Vangelis organize their sets of gongs. BY TYPE!!! I had no idea: CHOW GONGS, WIND GONGS, OPERA GONGS, Tuned Gongs (Gamalon?) I see these large frames full of metal disks and wonder how they were chosen, and how you remember what to play... It looks so random! IMHO
