Here's a short video taking a look at my current set up for sound sessions. I've been using this basic set up for about 2 years now. I've had the same gongs set up this way for almost 3 years, going back to when I got the set of 7 Paiste Bronze Gongs™. I've used these 6 main gongs since then, while substituting a different one or 2 when I feel like a different sound or energy.
The rest of the set up has remained steady, although I do substitute other instruments, or bring additional ones, when I'm hearing different sounds in my head. For example, I was using 4 old UFIP Sheng bell plates instead of the tuned gongs for about 2 years before I switch to the tuned gongs, as I was hearing different things. The hand held gong changes a lot depending on my mood.
Mallets area interesting thing. While there are certain mallets I have used for the past 20 or so years, others change as I find something new or different. I'm always experimenting with different mallets because these are the heart of your sound, and the mallet fanatic/nerd I am is always looking for something that will both feel better in my hands, and sound better on the instruments. I have boxes full of mallets I've collected over the years. I even came back from Gong Camp Portugal with 4 new mallets from Grotta Sonora (thanks Madhava!) that I'm experimenting with now.
And I could make another video of my set up next month and things could be different. I'm all about continuing to refine what I do and explore new sounds.
