Gongza Ney, popularly known as Gung Ja Ney is located at the bank of Drangme Chhu in Toedtsho gewog under Trashi Yangtse Dzongkhag at. According to the legend Khandro Yeshey Tshogyal offered tea to Guru Rinpoche at noon at this place while he was on his way to Gomphu Kora to subdue a demon. Thus, the name “Gung Ja”, which means “noon tea”.
The Ney was formally founded by Tshampa Dawa in 1988. In 1993, after five years of stay at Gunja, a Lhakhang was built by Tshampa Dawa. The Ney was later blessed by numerous Buddhist masters including Namkhai Nyingpo.
The main relics of the Lhakhang are; Guru Nangsi Zilnoen and wall paintings of Guru Tshengye and Zhabdrung Phuensum Tshogpa. The temple houses Guru’i Terdom, Guru’i Zhablham and Jachung Gongdo among many other relics.
Along the riverbank are three massive boulders that represents Rigsum Goenpa. Stone monuments like Tashi Gomang, Do Rangthang, Tsari Nyipa, Guru’s Zhugthri, and many more can be seen along the river bank and on the walls surrounding the temple.
From Doksum, we need to drive about 10-15 minutes to reach the end of the road from where we need to hike for about hour and a half to reach Gongza Ney. The best times to visit the Ney are in spring and winter. Many sacred sites are submerged in the swollen river during summer season.
