I can imagine you would sleep better using just firelight. Some of my favorite memories are using lamps and the wood stove.

I am pretty sure the main advantage to that Deitz lantern design is that the flame does not go out in windy locations.

Nothin like a good oil lamp. I always take one whenever I go camping. Got caught in a storm last year & being able to have the lantern in the tent at night providing just a few degrees extra warmth made all the difference.

That's a great benefit of oil lamps in cold climates. I wish I could find a good answer for off-grid air-conditioning. We live in the Gulf Coast of Texas and can only tent out for a few months each year. We're retired now and planning to move a few hundred miles north for a full growing zone change.

I use an Aladdin mantle lamp to heat and light my home for years! Nice white light! My Coleman 237 is my work light and sometimes my Coleman 249 or 236 are used. Dietz are my constant lights. The air pilot and blizzard are my favorite dietz. Feuerhand is another great SOLID kerosene lantern!! Lehman’s and cottage craft works are awesome!

I've got a couple of Feuerhand lanterns, and they certainly feel well made. I'd love to try some Dietz lanterns, but nobody seems to import them to the UK.

Tip. Any kind of oil lantern with a handle, never grab the handle. Use a lantern stick/ hook.

Camping and mining is another good use for these lamps. When in mine shaft if the flame starts getting dimmer, the oxygen level is low and it's better to get out of the mine.

I bought three Feuerhand Lanterns from Lehman's and a Kerosene stove from St.Paul Mercantile. To be honest I have not used the lanterns but used the stove to pressure cook with. The stove is a monster.

I like the oil lamps and use them as a back-up if you are going to decide to use them you should source an oil supply, lamp oil is not available like it used to be, also you should buy a few extra wicks of the size that you need they are not always available local.

Great video. We have lots of oil lamps including a Dietz from 'pre-China' manufacture. As for emergency lighting LED is now so energy efficient you can use a small solar panel to charge a gel or AGM battery that will run several LED lights all night. I used my LED flashlight to find something way back under a cabinet and two days later noticed that my flashlight was missing. YUP! I found it under that cabinet and it was STILL LIT! I couldn't believe it but on three AAA cells it gave continuous light for over 48 hours. I'm wiring our house for emergency LED lighting that will come on whenever the power goes out. It could easily be used for off-grid lighting without the fire risk.

@@hanorabrennan9202 Good point, The same is true for cell phone and computer screens with a small number of people (thankfully) experiencing serious consequences. Personally I would prefer living in a remote off-grid cabin, half way between god-forsaken and who-knows-where but until then the energy efficiency of LED lighting works for many.

Dietz and other draft lanterns aren't ideal for indoor use because it isn't as clean burning as a draft lamp, a well tuned draft lamp should put off almost no odor from the combustion. Also prices for modern lanterns can be better than the prices of older lanterns, especially ones in very good condition and pre-war with tinplate. I was thinking about purchasing an Aladdin for power outages because while a generator is good it is less than ideal to run it all night. A fuel burning light that is bright enough for reading would be great, especially one that isn't pressurized or very thirsty.

I’ve read that it’s also a safety feature to have some fragrance. If you smell it too much, time to turn it off. If you’re using odorless, more chance of not knowing when there is a build up of fumes and/or carbon monoxide. Not sure if it’s true, but it would make sense.

Your blue latern is a copy of a signal light used on railroad. Keep it from Mrs. O'Leary's cowand your barn or house should be safe and try a mirror reflector behind the lamp to send away from it in a beam aka T. Edison style.

Ever HEAR of an Aladdin's MAGIC Oil Lamp? "So Easy a Child can Light it. So SAFE they Can!" They have a wick and a MANTLE like a pressure lantern but DON'T have a pressurized tank of benzene fuel, that needs to be pumped during operation and can explode. They also use about 1/20th of the oil per hour that a kerosene lantern does and put out typically 4000-8000 as many lumens (YES, about equal to a 300 watt light bulb or 4200-4500 lumens!!!). I own two Dietz lanterns older than you and I, brought from my Grandparent's farm In Arkansaw in 1941 to Tulsa, they used for milking. But my Momma's 7th Birthday Present, her Aladdin's Lamp, I also have. Guess what I use when the power fails? No smoke, no fumes, no problems-Aladdin's Magic Lamp. Her's cost $12 in 1935-about $275 today.

The gospel :Jesus (God in the flesh) died for our sins and when we believe God raised Him from the dead, repent and put our Faith and trust in Him, confess Him as Lord, He gives us a new heart and desires and the Holy Spirit. Therefore we are no longer slaves to sin but free in Christ Jesus. Jesus is the only way to life and life eternally (John 14:6), If not with Him you are already spiritually dead and a slave to sin. There is no, 'your own master' (John 8:34). We are to forsake everything in the way of following Him and walk in the Spirit. To become apart of God's family and recieve rewards in heaven. And best of all have an intimate, inseparable relationship with Him. Jesus is coming back soon and who shall be able to escape His wrath? (Rev.6:16-17)
Why do hurricane lanterns look like that?
