This was actually super helpful. I usually bury the beater out of habit, but this convinced me it may be more beneficial to try and not. It always threw me off of the beat if I didn’t bury it because I’d be stuck with my foot hanging in the air. This gave me a good idea of how you come towards the bottom of the pedal so you can rest in between hits.
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 2 жыл бұрын
It's also okay to bury the beater though as long as you find a way that works for you. A lot of pros bury the beater and play crazy things. This is just one approach that works for me. But if you do try this out and play better, let me know, cheers Bryan!

This is perfect. Never bury the beater any more than you would a stick. It makes you tense and kills the resonance of the kick.

So I'm not supposed to bury the beater, I know a lot of guys do that like crazy, for example Stan Bicknell. Maybe it's just a matter of preference? However I'm gonna try to not bury the beater, thanks for the video
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 2 жыл бұрын
Yesss i think I shouldn't have said it as a mistake, more like a suggestion. We know many pros that play so well burying the beater. It works for them. This is really just my preference and my reasoning is it saves energy, keeps your foot less tense, and let's the kick drum ring more naturally. Also if I want to bury it(I do at times) i can switch to that too. So there's no need for you to change what you do if it already works for you Jackson, cheers!

@ArtOfDrummingHQ

@@Nekro_bird Actually it also doesn't matter much playing triggers. You can set the trigger settings to account for burying/not burying. Here's an example : Hannes Grossman buries his beater. He's one of the best metal drummers(if you know metal drummers) kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKuZnK2uhLVojbc Check out Flo Mounier (also buries his beater) and for a metal drummer that doesn't bury his beater, Alex Rudinger. I put my foot even further back almost to where it’s about to touch the heel plate for speed really help me and adjusting the actual action time of how close the beater is to the head also help. I got all this from watching George Kollias explain how he plays heel up, I can play heel down it just not as comfortable to playing heel up. If you want to adjust the beater head for less reaction time really does help when trying to play fast you waste less energy which took me along time to really understand with your feet

@@ArtOfDrummingHQ i find it easy to lift my heel up first and allowing my foot to naturally fall back into place so that the beater can swing forward... however, i do have a question. when you start to go faster, the heel lift and drop starts to feel not as efficient as just keeping your heel up and using the ankle mobility to help push the pedal. is that correct? Your heel doesnt appear to move as much in the video when you go faster so it seems like theres more ankle motion.

I once read the burying the beater will slow a player down, because of the time it takes for the beater to come backwards and the forwards on each stroke. I have since learned to not bury the beater, and now I use both techniques to get a different sound on purpose. I could be wrong, but I think Terry Bozzio does the same. Actually you do want to "bury the beater", but you do it with a raised heel, using controlled tension through the calf muscle. Not only do I play, I teach too. You'd be amazed at the number of students who get started using a natural bounce and it hinders them. I always explain it as, if you don't bury the beater in a controlled manner, you're creating a rhythm for your body to fight. Muscle control is what it's all about. Think of kick pedal rebound like you would think about stick rebound.

Great video! The only thing I would've liked explained more in depth is that burying isn't bad... While there's debate about whether it makes a noticable difference in sound some argue it's better for a punchier tone with less sustain, and heck Matt Garstka buries the beater. However, I doubt you'd find any speed metal guys burying as I think it's possible to play faster with the rebound.

Good video, though I do think different techniques, such as burying the beater, shouldn’t be considered “bad.” It’s just a different sound and can sound better than other options depending on the context of the music! I usually don’t bury the beater, but it’s actually something I WANT to practice for the sake of having more sounds to work with! :)

You might get this all the time what's the best spring tension to work on this?
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ Жыл бұрын
I recommend medium at least to start out with. I personally go tightest but that's only because I wanna play really fast, in a double bass context. But it will fatigue and drain you too quickly if you're not used to that and crank it all the way up. I also went from medium to max in about 6 months by gradually tightening the springs every 2 weeks

This technique will work regardless of pedal settings, just a different feel and tension your foot will need to work with. I use max tension on these dws though because they're pretty light still compared to other pedals of the same range.

I like a lot of these tips, but I would go as far to mention that burying the beater IS a matter of preference (as Jackson Hju mentioned in the pinned comment.) Many of us learn that way, since most drummers play this way. That being said, I can get behind challenging oneself to learn a different technique, because that's always helpful. For instance, when playing singles, NOT burying the beater can make all the difference in sound when playing styles like jazz. Keeping the beater off the head gives that nice open, resonant sound that jazz is known for. Bury the beater in the head and you lose that. For what it's worth, this is the argument that I have heard the most when it comes to burying or not burying. Of course, if one does this simply for the sake of the sound, then DO know that it's possible that you're going to lose a lot of that sound when playing live, depending on how the sound guy EQ's your kick. It will likely still have more low end, but if you like that open, resonant sound, then you should ask to see if they're willing to work with you to try an keep it. Assuming that their system can accurately produce it. Other than that, again, I think it's absolutely worth learning how to play in a style that one's not used to. But, that doesn't make what you're used to "bad" technique. 🪙🪙 Edit: included the pinned comment poster's name.

Hello. I've been playing drums for 2.5 years. I've experimented with different spring tensions, but i'm always burying the beater. I'm not using double pedal a lot (Pearl P-932). Today i tried to max out spring tension and play without burying the beater. It feels different. I can play without burying it if not playing fast. But there's one problem: while playing doubles on high speed (let's say, 150bpm), i make not 2 but 3 hits. It's either 1 hit or 3 hits. The question is, is it worth trying to re-learn right foot technique to not bury the beater? Does spring tension need to be high to not bury the beater? It's frustrating and disappointing to be unable to play "right", but i can play "wrong" and get results i need (for now). Will i regret burying the beater in future? Additional info: for doubles i'm using slide technique; im not planning to play double kick very fast or play hardcore genres, but probably going to play some punk; i generally prefer mid-tempo songs.

I don't bury the beater only because I want my foot to be able to rest when it's doing nothing in between strokes. To save that extra energy and be more efficient. So that I don't need higher amounts of practice to be able to do what I do, as old as I get. However, when I'm playing fast, sometimes there's no room/time to not bury the beater and it becomes more efficient to bury it. A different example I will give you. I have a student who I recommend just burying the beater because his leg is 2x heavier than mine and even with max tension on a dw5000, the beater struggles to come off the head naturally. So for him burying the beater is more efficient and trying not to will require more energy. So the guiding principle is : what is most efficient for you. And every factor must be flexible in your pursuit of that. That being said, from what you tell me, max tension is not good for you. Because you're now fighting against it, back it off to medium at least. It helps you to bury the beater more easily now. Also I recommend changing spring tension gradually if you wanna experiment. Like crank 3 turns a day till you get to max if you wanna play at max(for resistance training) I personally now play with 40% tension. Here's a video on my latest concept of spring tension kzbin.infoe9jCNbpMWLM?si=WqMKR3HgGZGNOFs3

One question :) when you sit, do you support/ rest your feet on the pedal(S) so that your ankle is doing the work ooor do you kind of hover over the pedals rising your legs and the work comes from the whole leg? (which I find less stressing on the ankle but a bit tiring in the long run on the abs and a bit on the legs? Thanks
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ 11 ай бұрын
I play heel up hovering. as you see me go faster it's more apparent my heel doesn't touch the base. But it's crucial you don't overdo this. Some people hover too high and it's too taxing on balance and upper leg muscles. I choose heel up because it's easier to get more power with less motion/effort. Heel down works fine for lower volumes. As for the ankle motion, it's possible with both heel down or up to play ankle, and quite necessary to do fast tempos anyway. Will make a video on this. It's a very good question and hard to answer all the details in a comment

@artOfDrummingHQ Awesome video 🙌 What muscles do you use to lift and lower your leg? awkward moment for me :(
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ Жыл бұрын
Hey its a combination of thighs and calves. The thigh needs to strengthen a little to suspend the foot, and then the calves need to push the pedal for the fast strokes, whilst the momentum keeps it rocking at a steady pace and roughly same height to not disrupt the thigh
@drewkarchev
@drewkarchev Жыл бұрын
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ how difficult. that is, all movements occur due to contraction of the calf muscle? and the hip at this time just keeps the leg in limbo? if so, in slow motion it looks like you're lifting your leg with your hip. I'm confused…
@ArtOfDrummingHQ
@ArtOfDrummingHQ Жыл бұрын
Not in limbo, it will still go up and down because of the rocking motion due to the calve. The only way to totally freeze the thigh is if we play heel down or use our shin muscles. Thomas Lang and Derek Roddy does that. So think of your heel being suspended but it still rocks up and down. Its the ankle that's swiveling, and the front of the foot pushing down when you use your calf. Not the hip lifting(which has nothing to do with the ankle and foot at all). Although it can look a little similar.
@drewkarchev
@drewkarchev Жыл бұрын
@@ArtOfDrummingHQ Thanks for the reply friend. It turns out that only the calf muscle is responsible for the movements of the mallet, while the thigh does not perform any function?

That's right, movement of the heater caused by calve muscle. Thigh has to pick up leg to begin, and support the leg throughout while the calf does the work.

I personally disagree with the "burying the beater" comment. For some people (myself) the way I sit rested at a drum kit means the beaters are already touching the head (yes I play heel up). Its mostly just about ending up where you started and making sure your leg is relaxed in my opinion (but I'm also not as fast as art of drumming hq so maybe I am objectively wrong? Oh well)

Nono, you're legit. Lots of people play burying too. It's just the way I teach my technique for more efficiency and more energy saved by relaxing your foot when it doesn't need to.
