Great review! Can't wait for mine to come in. I'm buying it mostly for a lightweight, fast video lens too. For youtube videos, I currently use a Canon EF-S 10-18mm STM on the Ra with the 4K crop. I find that I'm mostly using it at 16 or 18mm. The video quality is very good IMO, but the maximum aperture of f/5.6 at 16-18mm is sometimes a hindrance. The section on the low noise of the focus motor was much appreciated! One question: in the vlogging section, that was the with the 4K crop on the EOS R, correct? It looked like it, but just want to be sure.

It was the 1080p without any crop but with electronic stabilization (not „enhanced”) which does crop in a little bit. For video work - you’ll love it!

Btw for youtube I shoot and edit in a 1080p timeline and then upscale to 4K on export 😉

@@kamilkp Ah, I should probably look in to that again. Would definitely help on hard drive space. I think I tried and there was something I didn't like about it, but I can't remember what now.

Good video. I never knew those astro filters that go behind the lens existed. I am off to check your other videos to find more info on them. Just picked this lens up to use for 4k video mostly to compensate for the crop, hope it works out. Thanks!

Good review. Are the astro photos you show, with the strong peripheral aberration/astigmatism, with or without in-body correction applied?

Would you recommend it for KZbin talking head videos?

I always had AF only on the Backbutton - I did try out that lens and ... yes no problem for me. I can do AF with the back button and MF all the time, without switching AF/MF in camera menue.

Excellent video Kamil, thank you very much. I want to purchase a lens between 14 and 24 mm for the Milky Way. My camera is a Canon RP, which lens do you recommend? I would really appreciate your suggestions please. Thank you!

When I apply the lens correction to 16mm, I see that the LR does a crop but I don't see how much in mm. If I apply lens correction to 16mm does the image become 24mm or smaller?
@kennethcheong4498 Жыл бұрын
You mentioned you wouldn't recommend the 16mm focal length for milky way photography. If not, which focal length is better suited for that application?
@kamilkp Жыл бұрын
24 is best imo

Great review. Canon haven't yet produced a 20 / 24 mm RF f1.8 or f2.8 lens thats suitable for astro photography. Sigma have the Sigma 20mm f/1.4 DG HSM Canon Art Series, Rokinon have the 20 mm MF EF mount. What you you recommend? I have 3 R bodies, RP h-alpha mod, R & R5 & they're main use is astro photography. Thanks in advance.

I think for widefield astro a Sigma 28mm f/1.4 is phenomenal. If it’s too tight sometimes then pano stitching is your friend. But it’s true, there is no good RF lens in that department yet

Hi Kamil, thanks for posting this very useful review and providing access to raw files. I am particularly interested in this lens for backpacking (nice complement to my RF 24-105L), but also for astrophotography (in addition to, or ideally instead of, my Samyang 14/2.8). I converted the photos to 16 bit tiffs using DPP and then imported into Lightroom. This works better than adjusting distortion in Lightroom and cropping. Interestingly, there seemed more residual vignetting on the left side of the vertical astro photos. From a sharpness perspective, the lens seems okay for astro when stopped down to f/4. Your raw files are very, very low in contrast compared to what I get using my Samyang. Is this because you shot the photos with quite a lot of light pollution? I don't have light pollution as an issue where I live. I'm hoping that low contrast is not a problem with this lens. Thanks

Yeah I shot them from a Bortle 7. Hence I also shot some astro with an Ha filter

I am very divided regarding this lens... I would only use it for timelapse and for vlogging with the R6 so I guess it should be OK? 16 is a bit wide anyway so the cropping shouldn´t be a problem. I would really like the Sigma 20/1.8 but that price.... and the weight...

I bought this basically for the reduced weight(from the 16-35mm f2.8 III), the LR profile is now available and why not. I checked out your images and was surprised to see the ISO being moved with astrophotography in order to get the deeper apertures after f2.8. The increased noise at 6400 ISO with this type of photography is ridiculous.More noise than stars.

That’s a bummer, I was considering to buy this lens for my new EOS R for Milky Way shooting. Until now I’ve been using an EOS 200D + tokina11-16mm and I was happy about it. What budget friendly (less than 800€) options would you consider if you were me? RF Samyang 14mm F2.8? The new tokina?
@kamilkp3 жыл бұрын
For Milky Way I’d recommend something like a 20mm or 24mm prime. Canon EF24mm f/2.8 is faily cheap - I used it for a while and was quite happy with it

Can you use a normal ND filter at the end with the way the lens protrudes out when it is focusing?

Yes, not a problem. There is a filter thread there for traditional screw-on filters

I have one and it is a excellent selfie lens. Canon DPP is the correct way to convert your Canon RAW files. DPP will give the same or better lens correction than the camera will. Canon engineers designed the system to use DPP, and, you already paid for DPP in the purchase proce of your camera, so you would be mad not to use it. I started using DPP for all my Canon lens raw file conversions 7rs ago, and haven't looked back.

Hi Kamil, very niice review. Subscribed your channel . I am having an EOS -R and planning to buy a wide angle lens to the Addition . My requirements are Landscape , Northern lights during my travel to Lapland from dubai 🙂. Basic astro . Could you please advise a RF lens & Needed filter to avoid light pollution as you know in dubai it’s difficult to get almost dark places . Tyia

Interesting fact that it’s actually like 14mm and the cropping/ correction takes it down to 16mm

Yeah exaclty. The 16mm is most likely true for the in-camera corrected JPEGs so RAWs must be wider than that

I don’t think so because it has a lot of barrel distortion. It it well corrected by the camera but corners get stretched and sharpness suffers

@markshirley013 жыл бұрын
The barrel distortion is not good for video on interior or architectural work.
