Up north, utility companies can't cut you off in the winter so they don't pay and when the spring comes, they cut everything off. By that time the bill is out of control. Also if you have someone in the home that needs the utilities for medical reasons, you can have a doctor write a letter to the utility company and they can't shut it off. They know all these tricks.

There are programs out there to help low income households with utility bills. It may require researching them out on the internet etc. Paying something on the utility bills each month would have brought the bill down some. The piper now wants to be paid. It's reality that she is now facing. Messy you have a lot of common sense. I, for one, am glad you are bringing these issues up and not sugar coating them. I remember when they told us we didn’t have to pay utilities during the pandemic…. We did anyways.. some people that were still working took advantage of not paying and had to pay back money they thought was free.
