cm1727 what people also need to remember is that she’s playing a 15 yr old Baltimore girl, my sisters voice when she does theatre plays is oddly squeaky but it fits so well with whatever character she plays.

Marissa has a really good voice! Sometimes I wish I can travel back in time to 2002 and see the original Broadway cast. I've liked Hairspray since I was almost 15! I'm really excited for NBC's upcoming holiday broadcast this December

Her Tracy seems so exaggerated, but that's probably for comedic effect. I think she makes it work--you get the feeling that she's delusional about her star potential, & it makes you sympathize with her more. So there's a good reason for the nasally voice, pitchy singing, facial expressions, etc.

You're right. I just want to say something, it's not "Her Tracy" like you said, it's the actual Tracy. Marissa is the 1st Tracy ever in the musical version of Hairspray (2nd Tracy after the original Rikkie Lake from the movie). So that perfomance should be the base for the rest of the Tracies thay comes after.

They call Marissa the original Tracy meaning she was n the original Broadway Cast. Ricky Lake was simply apart of the movie which is in no way correlated with Broadway. They don't call the movie a "Broadway Movie", this was just someone filming the musical number from the movie.

When I saw the original John Waters film .. at the time I thought this would make a great musical.. the influence was hearing Motormouth Mabel's voice .. eventually it happened..Never forgot Divine as Edna Turnblad in the John Waters original. Saw a great production of the musical at the Curve theatre, Leicester at a Public Dress Rehearsal which brought the house down. This show creates goose bumps when one recognises the reality that it was a stand against racial segregation ..

I thought this would be amazing because she was the first, but this is possibly the worst Good Morning Baltimore I’ve heard. It doesn’t help that she’s a 30 year old playing a girl half her age. I think if she had not been the first, people would say that she is way too old for the part. Most actresses in this role are in their early 20s.

This is NOT the "original" Hairspray. Why is everyone saying this? Marissa Janet Winokur was not the "original" Tracy Turnblad. Ricki Lake was the "first" Tracy in the initial 1988 Hairspray film, produced and directed by John Waters. Marissa was a great Tracy, however, in the Broadway film, Ricki was a superb choice in the initial project, and Nikki Blonsky was a great choice for the 2007 film.
