I disagree with you. You should study, and your parents should encourage you to study, something that is practical and will yield good money and in a sector which is in high demand. Pakistan is an impoverished country, the stakes are higher, there is so much poverty and corruption. For parents, their support and dependence is upon their male child usually. I say this as someone who was born and raised in the west and studied a masters in a field that was of interest to me but not practical and an easy job to get in the real world. Now I wish I had studied something else. In the west, what earns you the most money is becoming a "tradie" (plumber, electrician etc). Also, men especially, need to be "street smart", otherwise they're not going to succeed by simply being a bookworm. Skills and a sharp mind is what is required. Of course, you need to keep a fine balance too, you don't want your child to become someone who does not follow the Deen. In relation to old age, when it's my time to be old, I don't want to be dependent on anyone - not my kids, my spouse or my future daughter in law. I am also firm on the idea that in laws should live separately from their kids. That ends the source of all fights right from the root. Distance makes the heart grow fonder. Privacy and independence are paramount.
