As much as I thought the Sgt. Major was a total dink, he was right on the money the way he chewed out Cronauer when he checked in off leave wearing something resembling a dress. I would've asked him, "So I guess you decided to ditch the babushka that came with this get-up?" Wearing an Air Force uniform hat with it is downright disrespectful. I don't know if that's grounds for NJP or not but I'd bet money a guy would wind up on restriction and extra-duty at the very least. I would expect him to be spending his evenings and weekends scrubbing floors and toilets for the next month to help him get centered. And Dickerson was right about Cronauer's need to stay off his radar, 99% of the time high-level attention is bad. The fact that the Vietnamese kid that Cronauer befriended wound up being a VC terrorist is not far-fetched in the slightest, that's why you don't consort with them. That was a time and place when the VC were sending 8 year old kids with shoe-shine boxes loaded with explosives to take out American GIs. Frequenting bars off-base seems like a bad idea.
