Good mornings are a blessing. Years ago I snapped my shit up doing way too heavy deadlift as a novice and couldn't do any hip hinges without hurting my back. Saw my man Alex recommending them and I incorporated them to my workouts. At first I felt like they tweaked my back sometimes, but after consistant effort and honing in the technique I really started to enjoy the movement. And I think good mornings strengthened my lower back so much that I don't really tweak it anymore. So thanks for that.
@AlexLeonidas2 жыл бұрын
Fantastic! I too snapped my back up years ago and Good Mornings allowed me to come back stronger than ever. Building the spinal erectors, refining all my hip hinges, and getting more out of less weight! Glad they've benefitted you too bro.

I competed in drug free powerlifting back in 1987-1991 and did a 685 meet deadlift. I never did good mornings but would do stiff legged deadlifts off blocks (deficit) and they made my lats sore. Good mornings helps me stay strong in an athletic position, especially when an opponent attempts to snap my head down to the mat in grappling. One time my opponent did a snap down on me, the force was so strong (dude was twice my weight) I snapped my left hamstring. Since adding good mornings, with progressive overload, I’m much stronger in the athletic stance and much more confident grappling again. I used to worry about my injury every time I sparred, which resulted in me getting smashed because of my lack of confidence in some positions. Since I’m stronger I can spar freely again. Strength training is King for athletes, also Good Mornings saves lives! Awesome video on one of my favorite exercises Alex

Even if the spinal erectors were biased in being overloaded- why’s that a bad thing? Strong spinal erectors are essential for a healthy back and lifting longevity anyway. Also, in my experience, the Good Morning teaches you to better brace your core and balance in other lifts. It’s a good exercise to practise.

I actually prefer good mornings over RDLs. Same movement pattern but good mornings have imo not only better stimulus/fatigue ratio(as Alex would say "getting more out of less weight") but they also carryover to both squat and deadlift. Now RDLs might have better carryover to deadlift but I find good mornings more well rounded and they carry over to both squat and deadlift.

Honestly that's the best form of RDL I ever did, feel so good on lower back, recovery quicker,... Nevertheless for the moment Im training in a gym which don't have trap bar. So I'm RDL twice a week with the conventional bar. I've noticed that I struggle to feel my hamstrings on the exercice, and on my second session of the week I feel my lower back tired. The cool thing is that even though the spinal erectors usually fail before the glutes and hamstrings on this lift, we know that isometrics do not cause much muscle damage and arent as fatiguing. However there IS lengthening and shortening of the glutes and hamstrings, so there is more hypertrophy for them.

@blingeranvideos65682 жыл бұрын
I want to start this comment by saying I in fact agree 100% with everything disproving the nonsense people say about goodmornings. I actually want to address what you said about non-deadstop hip-hinges "kicking the asses" of deadstop hip hinges. Namely that as an individual with shorter arms, you benefit disproportionately from non-deadstop hip hinges and will also have a way larger recovery cost than normal, even considering the high recovery cost of the standard conventional deadlift. For me personally, I have long limbs and a shorter torso. For me, the difference in recovery cost is much smaller between the two, and I in fact benefit a lot more from making more of my squat work paused because variations that aren't paused or tempo squats tend to beat up my knees if I go for them more than once a week. Just felt like it was worth mentioning that leverages can play a role in what people find affects their recovery cost.

@dozermendoza18 күн бұрын
Think about this. The increases in strength were not biased toward "isometric" strength increase of the spinal erector. So where did the strength come from? Think even more about this. Let's say you did use a heavy weight for the good morning. You step in and fail at 5 reps. Notice that the failure was not due to spinal erector, OTHERWISE YOU WOULD ROUND YOUR BACK AND CAVE OVER at failure. Meaning the spinal erector can isometrically hold more weight than you can do the Good Morning with. What was the limiting factor? How come you couldn't lift the weight, even though your spinal erector maintained isometric contraction of spine without bend? Other musculature must have been the reason you couldn't perform the lift. WHAT MUSCULATURE WAS IT? What musculature of the posterior chain failed, if it wasn't the spinal erector? EXACTLY!!

Hey alex, love the conjugate content- one q I have is how often do I need to rotate exercises? I’ve been doing good morning for months lol
@jordansimerly95402 жыл бұрын
Nuanced answers because you don’t have to change all the exercises. I’ve seen conjugate changing the main exercise every week on the elitefts website, however the accessory’s changed more like every 3 weeks. The thing about conjugate is it’s best done (as any program really) considering the individual. So doing the shifting variations every week to help prevent injury, and sticking with the same accessory’s for a few weeks to target a specific weak point. Sooo yeah, I would look into bringing up weak-points if you wanna get really good with programming for conjugate. Lastly, conjugate can be done different ways. Why I said is NOT gospel. I personally haven’t changed the big first compound every week as I don’t have as much equipment and it’s just a lot of work to program like that
@jordansimerly95402 жыл бұрын
Shorter answer, I change some exercises OR rep ranges every 3 weeks. Again no gospel, but generally it’s good to switch up every 3 weeks.
@erkka58002 жыл бұрын
Dave Tate says the later they come in the workout the less often you rotate them, ME variation changes every week, or 3 week waves if you are beginner/intermediate. Supplemental exercise changes according to your specific weakpoint so 1to3 weeks. IIRC acceccory exercises can be changed every 3-8 weeks weeks, finishing exercises like abs, lowerback, facepulls can be changed every 1-3 months.

Good Mornings have been the only hip hinge that I use (other than single leg RDLs) because of how much measly amount of weight can be magnified. One issue I run into is knowing how and when to progress, and more importantly being able to assess my own form. I do occasionally go to the gym, and I went a few days ago and my good mornings felt completely different. I’m going to keep riding it out and assessing how I am doing, but if anyone has tips of progression and assessing form, I’d love to know.

I want to so them so badly, I just can't perform them without the bar constantly shifting and rolling on my back. I tried both high and low bar, squeeze my back and try to bend the bar over my back with my lats, it still feels so awkward. What can I do to perform this exercise, it feels fine on my lower back etc. Just super weird with the bar up top.
