This is advice I wished I’d learned when I started learning to play the mandolin. And also a little bit of Billy in the Lowground in the key of “D”. God bless.

Great advice! We’re about the same age, sounds like many of the same experiences. Nice job on Billy in the Low ground! God Bless

Great advice. I never compare myself to anyone else in my musical playing or accomplishment. I am in competition with only myself to be the become the best musician & vocalist within developing my potential. It requires a balance. One should always strive to reach greatest potential, but realizing that pushing to increase insight & knowledge is what keeps us growing musically. I guess the greatest discipline is a sense of balance in an approach. Never beat yourself up, everyone always starts from one point & continues to advance in time. Enjoy your journey & the gift of creativity. This gentleman is a mighty fine musician. Thank you Sir for sharing your insight into becoming a better musician.

I like your green color mandolin. Wish I had a left-handed one that color. Great video, Sir!

Thank you so much! It's been a good mandolin to me!

I agree. It's almost like wanting something. I like wanting something better then having it. The fun seems to fade after you have it. I've also learned to enjoy your time getting there, instead of finally being there.

It’s funny how the Lord puts things in your path. I’ve been taking lessons for a while now and after today’s lesson I was pretty discouraged and just figured I wasn’t cut out for the mandolin and likely playing music at all. I’m sitting on the couch flipping through videos here on KZbin and up pops this one. I appreciate the advice, I think I’ll go pick up my mandolin again.

I hope this helps. If I can learn to play the mandolin, so can you brother.

Good advice!! One thing I figured out after playing for many years is the joy is in learning and improving. Not being able to execute a passage, then slowing it way down, going over and over it and then being able to play it. That feeling of accomplishment is so satisfying!!!

Cervantes (who wrote Don Quixote) said "The road is always better than the inn." Sounds like you and your wife live by that advice. Thank you.

Thanks, and to Billy, too. AND if you care to offer any, what would you say to a guy a bit older than you that has NEVER played an instrument but have suddenly wondered if I could learn (a little bit) to play the mandolin? Any suggestions? I can afford a decent instrument.
@kelleymandolins65197 ай бұрын
Thank you for watching. Yes Sir you can learn to play. Whatever instrument you get, make sure it is set-up properly. Meaning, the action at the nut and the bridge are correct. If the action is too high, it will be hard to play and will discourage you. There are tons of beginner mandolin books available. Joe Carr is no longer with us, but he has some really good teaching materials out there. Dix Bruce is another. There are many good teachers on here as well. God bless you on your journey.

Thanks for the good advice. I'll see where this takes me. God bless you, too. I started watching your videos and Rosa's string works, so I have some solid people to help me. ALL the best.@@kelleymandolins6519
