@@HAP3SPEAKZ Don't know why, but if they were 'live' they could not sing live. They had to mime to a new pre-recorded version. Can't remember why, think it was some dispute with some union somewhere. Will try & find out.

Miming to a recording happened for a couple of reasons. It gets around any number of rights and expenses related to airing the to mime to. It gives the network at least partial rights to that particular recording (for ToTP commercials and news broadcasts or other BBC purposes) and it keeps the performers from sliding any language in there that BBC deemed indecent. I don't think tthey censored the actual words of songs (I wouldn't put it past them) but they didn't trust these youngsters with their rock and roll to not do an on the spot edit to something 'indecent'. If they were requiring edits for broadcast decency standards, this kept the singers from 'mistakenly' singing it the original was, with the 'offensive' language.

I think the word might have been "authentic", Hap. I love when Freddie sings "9", you get "1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8" in the background.

Freddie; strutting, half mike, crowd control on on..... Deaky; disco, badass bass and secret weapon. Roger; facial expressions twirling his drumsticks, voice. Brian; red special solos and notice when he’s getting towards the end of his solos he shakes his head. In live performances he shakes his head and looks up to see if they are going to jam a little more. Lifts the red special vertically. Yep 4 amazingly talented guys. Couldn’t make it up if you tried. Yet we lived and are still living through and with their music and musicianship. 👑

I love that song. The album version is a little longer and sounds even better. Please react to the video It’s A Hard Life. The video has an operatic feeling like you mentioned about the opening of the live song. Please remember about Killer Queen at Top of the Pops 1974. It was their first real hit and first time in the charts in the US. Seven Seas of Rhye was in the charts in the UK which was right before Killer Queen, but didn’t make it over here in US. It’s funny, because Brian was the one who wanted the group to go the heavy rock route. Brian came down with hepatitis and was very ill. The others carrier on in the studio and he was worried hearing Freddie was writing songs like crazy. When he recovered he was most hesitant about Killer Queen thinking they were selling themselves to being “soft”. Freddie told him there was a way to have their music with harmonies, a great melody and room for a ripping guitar. Brian went along with it and it ended up being the first song showcasing the now known “Queen Sound”. Brian said in a documentary you can’t deny seriously clever lyrics with a great song. Play the Game live at Montreal 1981 is a great song also. I saw your genuine enjoyment while I was watching the live aid reaction. I promise you would love the Wembley 1986 concert just as much. The vocals and instruments were spot on like you saw while reacting to Now I’m Here. The entire concert was a cut above!! Maybe do 10 or 15 at a time?? There are improvs in there singing 50’s and 60’s songs paying tribute to the pioneers of rock and roll. Medleys of their early rock songs and a great ending after the last song We Are the Champions that you must see.

When Freddie stood up, the piano kept on playing, so I don‘t think it was live in the BBC studio. It has an old-fashioned, music hall touch on it, and yes, kind of innocent, too. This song is said to be for his first steady boyfriend David Minns, whom he left his long time fiancée Mary for. But of course, this relationship was absolutely secret, even forbidden, back in the time.

Thought you might like this background info. You were exactly right about "Seaside Rendevous." "Discussing the song ["Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy"] in an interview with Kenny Everett on his radio show, Freddie Mercury described the song thus: "It's in my 'ragtime' mood that I get a chance to, [Laughs] to do on every album and this time, this is something I've come up with this time around." This links to his comments about "Seaside Rendezvous" about wanting to do more 'vaudeville' style songs in the future ("Seaside Rendezvous was featured on previous album A Night At The Opera). Everett described it as "a little frilly number from the pen of Fred.""

Awesome! beautiful song! Their appearance on Top of the pops for Killer Queen was what catapulted them into the public eye. They hated that they had to lip-sync (the movie got that part right.) Thats why they made the music video for Bohemian Rhapsody. I agree, they never gave in to the masses! Their genuine originality is why they stand the test of time! There was nothing he couldn't sing! In case the line "Be your Valentino" sounds familiar, Freddie referred to Rudolf Valentino, the latin lover of the silent screen. He also made that reference in Seaside Rendezvous.
