‘Good on him’: Tim Minchin speaks out in his own concert about Israel situation

Sky News contributor James Macpherson says it was good for musician and actor Tim Minchin to weigh in on Israel’s conflict.
Mr Minchin has now denied claims he commented on the controversy of a pro-Palestine protest held at Sydney Theatre Company where he allegedly claimed people live in “lefty bubbles” and have a misguided view on the Israel-Hamas conflict.
“I understand the frustration with his comments regarding Israel,” Mr Macpherson told Sky News host Andrew Bolt.
“We would all have liked him to have made those comments widely publicised.
“But before we criticise him too hard, I think we’re in a situation right now where we should take the wins where we can find them.”

To suggest Tim Minchin is left or right leaning is ridiculous. Tim has a take on many issues but to say he leans left, or right, is not justifiable. He is not even anti religion; he just takes the piss out of religious hypocrisy and like many of us sees religion in the same way as fantasy and fairy tales. He has said many times, although he is not religious, he believes in people's right to religious beliefs.

Watch his rant on confirmation bias. He calls himself left/progressive. He reaches across the divide because he knows it's the only way to bring people together, which is what the left is supposed to be about but often forgets. He just doesn't like the way that the left often communicates, and he knows that preaching to his own side doesn't make much difference.

NO ..... the last thing people want when they pay to go an entertainer is for them to start pushing politics on them, no matter what side it is. They come to be entertained, if they wanted a political lecture they would have gone to one. Probably the worst offender is Peter Garrett, still lecturing people at Midnight Oil concerts. You'd think after his disastrous time in actual political office, achieving absolutely nothing positive, he'd know to keep his mouth shut.
@PianoDiary85
@PianoDiary85 6 ай бұрын
Except their audience usually knows what kind of material they put out before paying to go to a concert or a show. Going to watch a performer you know has strong views on things is a lot different to going to a show where you expect to be removed from the reality of the world for a couple of hours and then have people announcing support for 1 side in a current conflict when there are likely people from the other side in the audience. Politics might not be your thing, but a lot of people enjoy political debate and hearing different takes on things. Tim is also a cabaret performer. He does many different things - not just comedy. In fact, he doesn't even consider comedy as one of the top few things that he does. That's why his work is often misunderstood by people who don't follow closely. He is a musician first and foremost - a very good one. Having said all this, there isn't even any proof of what Tim may or may not have said. This whole thing is ridiculous and he doesn't deserve to be crucified. Most people want good things. Tim is one of those people.

@@johnwoodrow8769 Not necessarily. People can do just as well without degrees, but it still means you have spent time reading things. Just because people have different views to you does not make them stupid or uneducated. It means we've read different things and had different experiences. There is nothing wrong with calling out people who cover up child abuse, then actively fight against victims claims to deter others from claiming. These were the findings of the Royal Commission into his behaviour. I'd like to think most reasonable people who are aware of child abusers would report them. Surely you would? That song also raised money for child abuse victims. The church/ priests are not above doing terrible things and should never be above criticism. Those who consistently defend this kind of behaviour are destroying the reputation of the church further. It's part of the reason why I no longer attend. Thank goodness there are people like Tim who call it out. As a side note, Tim is not against Christians. He is quite happy having perfectly respectful and intelligent conversations with anyone. He just doesn't like it when religion causes people to ostracise others or protect those who should be called out.

This is a comment on grunge music and how Tim struggled to get into the industry in the 90s when that's what people wanted because he considers himself super lucky and can't relate to that dark kind of stuff. He is impersonating Eddie Vedder/Pearl Jam who many bands were trying to sound like at the time. The only lived experience Tim has to draw from to try to evoke his dark side is "daddy never came to my ball games." It's SUPPOSED to be overly dramatic and ridiculous, like grunge is overly dramatic. Tim has only ever called out terrible behaviour or things he doesn't think bring people together. he is actually highly self-reflective and cares deeply about values, ethics and morals and how people can be better people. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZq3iYRro7J9g68 It's hard not to like him when you actually know who he is.

Tim wore eyeliner ironically to mock rock cliches (that also explains his hair). He also wore it so people could see his eyes properly when he was playing (especially considering he uses a lot of irony so his expressions convey his true meaning). Then it became his trademark so he kept wearing it. That and..."cos he can." Though he hardly wears any these days and doesn't wear it in real life. It's a bit silly to be upset by someone putting colour on their face.

Whatttt? Tim is a mostly self-taught virtuosic pianist who has written music for 2 musicals (Groundhog Day and Matilda) that went to Broadway. Matilda is still a long running show on the West End that also got made into a successful movie. On top of that he writes music for TV. kzbin.info/www/bejne/qZq3iYRro7J9g68 / kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3fZeZingsumgLM / and if you want to see him absolutely murder a piano, watch this from 4:34 - 8:00 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aam0nn2Vq917eJY. He is one of the most talented musicians there is. He also never bothered to learn to read or write music properly. A lot of his stuff is improvised which is why he never plays things the same way twice. He is very intelligent and highly talented. Also if you decide to watch the whole of that last link, understand this: It is a comment on grunge music and how he struggled to get into the music industry in the 90s when everyone wanted bands who sound like Eddie Vedder. Tim can't relate well to this dark sounding music because as someone born middle class into a loving family he considers himself super lucky. In this song he is doing his very best to bring out his inner Eddie Vedder, but about the darkest thing he can cling to is "daddy never came to my ball games." It's MEANT to be ridiculously stupid and overly dramatic :). You are allowed to dislike his comedy, but no one who actually knows his work can call him a bad musician. Far from it.
