Vampires are sexy ones because they are literally an alegory to sex. The blood sucking/tranformation is about breaking the hymen and the hipnosis control of the victims is a direct reference to sexual hypnotists popular in victorian era. Rest In Peace Joel Schumacher, I know he still gets a lot of crap due to him making Batman Forever and Batman and Robin but he was a great director. He gave us some damn good films, from The Lost Boys, to Flatliners, to Falling Down and many many more. I have long since forgiven him for doing those films of Batman, I blame WB for being so reactionary towards the criticism that Batman Returns got and wanted to please toy companies and McDonald’s. That's one (of many reasons) thing I LOVE S. Craig Zahler's films. He's done Bone Tomahawk, Brawl In Cell Block 99, and Dragged Across Concrete and EVERY movie was shot EXACTLY how it was written on the pages. No studio interference! Bone Tomahawk was actually an exact shoot of his FIRST DRAFT of his script! So it is possible but, as great as Zahler's films are, he's always working with a tiny budget. Tho he does manage to get BIG name actors (Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson, Richard Jenkins, Vince Vaughn, Mel Gibson, etc) because they're all willing to work for a fraction of their regular salary because of how much they love and believe in the scripts.

As a Santa Cruz County native, this movie is one of the best movies filmed here. The comic book store in the movie is still around, though its no longer next to the Boardwalk (it moved to downtown-I want to say it was because it was of the 1989 Loma Prietta Earthquake). Edit: Maybe I should have watched the whole video before commenting.

I've never understood this mentality of "people will only see a movie with known actors". Maybe it's just me, but I usually base what movies I watch on their stories, their director, being attached to a well known IP, etc. I don't want actors hired just because they're famous, or else we'd end up with ridiculous scenarios like Chris Pratt as Mario.
@rcevey2
@rcevey2 2 жыл бұрын
It's a 'safe' option. And those safe options (prominent director, popular source material, etc.) are easier to judge than quality of the film or audience reaction. They'd rather spend a hundred million dollars on a crappy remake than risk it on 10, ten million dollar original ideas.
@otaking3582
@otaking3582 2 жыл бұрын
@@rcevey2 But seriously, who the hell says "I didn't care about this Batman movie before, but knowing that Robert Pattinson is attached has my attention"? (Which is a weird parallel to Shumacher, now that I think about it...) If you don't care about the IP or the premise, then having an actor you like probably won't change your mind at all. In fact, having celebrities involved can sometimes cause more harm than good (like casting Scarlett Johansson as Major Kusanagi in the live action Ghost in the Shell, or the aforementioned Chris Pratt as Mario).
@rcevey2
@rcevey2 2 жыл бұрын
@@otaking3582 It's hard to definitively say how much casting choices help a film, either out of interest or curiosity. Can't deny that, if Keanu Reeves or Henry Cavill is cast in a film, then it's attracting an audience. None of it will save a bad film, but it's seen as a 'safe bet' by executives.

Great video on one of the best vampire movies out there. Funny how the studio was very iffy on the Horror/Comedy idea as the same year Evil Dead 2 would come out the same year as The Lost Boys so a pretty defining year for Horror/Comedy movies. And yeah it absolutely doesn't need a remake, I'm not even sure what you can add outside of modern day technology and even that wouldn't have any impact on the story.

Back in the late 80's, when I worked at a local video store in D.C , there were certain movies that we knew, if you put them on the store's monitors, it would only be scant minutes before some customer would ask, "What is that, and can I rent it?" The distinctive flyover opening, (thank you, Michael Chapman!), combined with Gerard McMann's Goth-flavored theme, guaranteed that our VHS copies of THE LOST BOYS would fly out the door every time, pun intended!
