Beautiful analysis of a beautiful song. If you don't get teared-up listening to Marcus King, you are missing half of what he and his music is all about. Thanks!

When you hear that guy play, it's best just to shut up and close your eyes. As a lifelong guitar player I realize he takes nothing and turns it into not only something special but something timeless and moving. He is in his own lane on that axe. It's not just really good, it's iconic. It's Hendrix and Duane. It don't get no better in this world.

With the amount of soul and gift this young man exhibits I guess I can buy the apparition story. He’s definitely channeling way beyond his years.

Marcus made me shed tears at a solo acoustic show I saw him play in Austin. Dude is something special

I personally think King's performance [of] "Goodbye Carolina" at the Opry was the best version of the song. Definitely bluesy, but [with a] country element in it. Here [unlike his usual fuzz and distortion pedal tones], he just uses a bit more of a biting and clear tone, a little more hot and driven than clean, and just eeking into the twangy realm. [It's almost a straight into the amp type of sound.] It's strange, but it's possible with his ES-345 and his Fender Super Reverb (or perhaps his 50W Orange signature amp) and it works perfectly for this song. [Better that the studio and the other live performances of this song, dare I say.] And on the solo bit, I was thinking similar things about the solo. We were in Dm for the whole song (Tyler from "Music is Win" calls it "the saddest chord ever") and then we go into the more peaceful, I would even argue an ethereal D Major key for the solo. Well, technically it's D Mixolydian since we have the C Maj chord in the progression, but it's still emitting the same emotion as the major scale. King's more of a bluesier player, yet he executed the Mixolydian scale with ease at the Opry. The solo was tasty, soulful, and fit comfortably in the progression from the main solo progression all the way through the turn-around. And this solo was played by someone who constantly talks about expressing himself through the guitar as an extension to his person and soul. Not only does he talk the talk, he walked the walk. He demonstrated that all too well in this performance. Kudos to Marcus King, and God bless him in his endeavors!

Gotta respectfully disagree. Jam in the Van version is fantastic.
@vincentreyes61542 жыл бұрын
@@anthonyrussell9706 That is a good one, though. I'm just saying from the perspective as someone who is in choir, who plays guitar, [who has some elementary knowledge of music theory] and whose ear is tickled more by country than by rock, that I personally prefer the Grand Ol' Opry version. But both the acoustic and band performances from Jam in the Van were amazing too!

This is a truly amazing song for all sorts of reasons. What makes this for me is the second solo which is pure Duane Allman, one of his influences. This is really a fantastic peace of guitar in a great and very meaningful song to him.

Hi Henry! First of all, what an amazing perspective about the chord progressions related to the story of the vocals, it opened my mind big time for my next songwroting process. I wanted to ask you about the solos. And please correct me if Im wrong, if we have the chord progression Dm, F, G/B, C wouldn’t the Key be C major just starting on the II Chord? And also, when he changes to D and C for the last solo, wouldnt that be the V and the IV Chord of G major (which is the Dominant Chord (V) of the C major Key? And therefore solo around the G major and D major scale? I would love to hear your opinion! And thanks for these kinds of videos, they are amazing! 🙏🏻🙌🏻
