I love Cartier. Their watches are beautiful objects that for some reason never seem to click with me when I try them on. This doesn’t lessen my appreciation of Cartier, in fact, it does the opposite. They don’t pander all that much, and generally challenge you to adapt to them. I love brands that take that approach. Not to mention the imagination and fortitude it takes to riff on the same design themes for over a century… and still keep things fresh. Much respect to this brand.
@francescoa16952 жыл бұрын
ciao Type B Flieger! I agree with what you wrote about Cartier timepieces, but I still "discovered" that love at first sight with such a historic and fascinating brand and design is always born over time... when you put it on your wrist and wind it up every morning, it always takes you moreover. Sometimes the passion and love for the watch goes beyond our style patterns and dynamics. I will take a Cartier because it has a unique and iconic history, identity and charm. Having it on your wrist I'm sure it will give a lot of satisfaction! Francesco :-)
@typebflieger2 жыл бұрын
Hi, Francesco. I completely agree with you. It’s not just about the design. Most of my watches have some sort of historical significance or story attached to them. I’ll find my way to Cartier eventually, but I haven’t found that particular piece just yet. It’s good to hear your positive experience, as it will motivate me to further explore the brand. Cheers!

I have the Drive Retrograde version and I love it. Works with business casual or as a dress watch. Extremely legible dial and all the guilloche details on the silvered dial to admire and pass the time when I’m stuck in work meetings. But it is not for the itty bitty wrist committee.
@jomni2 жыл бұрын
I'm still wearing my moon phase. True. The dial looks really big due to the shape despite 40mm and sub-40mm sizes. A round dial on a cushion case would have less white space and more metal. But still the watch is lovely. Thought of selling it off many times but I still have it after all these years.
@realalexmackenzie2 жыл бұрын
I would still consider it. I don't yet have a Cartier in the rapidly growing collection, so this might fit the bill. Can't agree with the $50 watch strap observation though. I have gone full custom for my own collection, so price point is up ~$200 depending on material. However, even buying ready to wear, $50 is going to put you into some pretty cheap materials. There is a big difference between pressed gator pattern on cheap leather, and the real thing. Not every watch needs higher end material, but to have a hard cut-off at $50 is going to cause one to miss out on some great straps.

I think it’s a beautiful sport elegant watch and it was a fantastic drive watch just as it was. Cartier knew it. But people are not Cartier designers and good taste is like common sense, very uncommon. A ver lightweight, comfortable, slim, interesting watch, manual wind, sporty, classy, fun to wear, different watch.

It's a really lovely watch. Not wishing to be 'that guy', but one of the things that dissuaded me from getting one is that I see it as a 'dressy sports watch', and for that I feel that 3 ATM water resistance is not enough. In the end I bought a Radiomir 574 instead, but had the Cartier Drive even had 5 ATM, I might have got it instead.

The Drive should have been targeted squarely at the steel sportswatch crowd (AP Royal Oak, GP Laureato, Zenith Defy). Under 10mm thin, 100m of WR, screwdown crown, lume an excellent steel bracelet, able to be purchased at retail. Positioning it as an oversized dress watch is a missed opportunity.

To me, it was the right watch at the wrong time: a new elegant men's dress watch (maybe not one of Cartier's best, but still cool) released at a time when sports watches are all the rage. It's also now competing with the 2018 Santos AND the 2020 Santos Dumont, the 40mm Ballon Bleu (which I own, and it's freaking brilliant), the revived Pasha de Cartier, and the Must de Cartier. So it was nice...but what do you do when the rest of Cartier's collection in that price range is so lit right now?
@simonyu88382 жыл бұрын
I've been tempted by the black small seconds since I first saw it on video. The only things holding me back were the water resistance and coming on a leather strap instead of something more sweat resistant. Instead I ended up going for a Santos in blue. On that watch, the darker color helps tame the visual size and that's also why I'm tempted to look for a preowned black Drive. It might need to wait a bit as I did just pick up a USA edition Alain Silberstein x Louis Erard regulator and Glashutte Originale Panomatic Lunar in white. On a related note, it's a bit scary how quickly the KZbin algorithm started recommending your videos recently and who closely our tastes seem to align

I have the Drive Extra-Flat (c’mon Cartier, you couldn’t have come up with something more interesting than “extra flat”?) and I love it. I have the rose gold version and paid not much over what the steel MSRP was. I was absolutely motivated by price, but after getting it I realized how nice it was. The dial is great in person. The strap and pin buckle are nice too and you get that iconic crown. While I wouldn’t have paid MSRP, getting it for a little over 1/3 of that I was very happy. Still kicking myself for not getting it in white gold at almost the same great discounted price… I agree the standard editions seem too big, but the Extra-Flats were fantastic. I do really like the dial of the Dual TIme though. Overall, I think the Drive was meant to be a “driving” watch. Perhaps the size and shape were all about legibility while driving? Hard to say. I noticed much earlier this year the Drive was pretty off the Cartier site. I welcome it as I would imagine it was quite limited in production. Hopefully they destroyed excess stock too. I’m curious to see valuations in the future and would love to get John Goldberger’s take on the Drive.
