Not going to lie man in the past I have used Burpee eco-friendly organic seed starting mix that is organic labeled my buddy with a hemp Farm told me to do that. For the GDP run I used something a little more off-brand but still organic and amended it with worm castings and mycorrhizae and 444 + 286 of dr. Ocean Forest is great, but you have to approach it similar to the boost nutrients and cut the dosage to half by mixing it with Happy Frog 50/50ish. The types of strains you choose to grow plays bearing on the mix percentages as well. Certain strains fair better with higher concentrations and can flourish to bloom more efficiently with more or less. Knowing the strain's true tolerance and stress levels and how the soil's various concentrations during certain phases either enhances or hinders the plants progress is how you implement Ocean Forest. Just the same as you would with any other nutrient density.

Ocean forest is a great soil, where a lot of people go wrong is how they go about water, when you over water your plants they are forced to take up more nutrients then they regularly would, water properly and you’ll have some crazy good results with ocean forest. That’s actually a good question man. Even though organic amendments are very forgiving as opposed to synthetic nutrients that are highly concentrated, you can still get burned if you overdo it. But you also don’t need to adjust your water pH when growing organically so there’s a lot of room for error as opposed to not growing organically.

So you recommend happy frog and strawberry fields? At what stage,? seedling, veg, flower? Will it carry me throughout the whole grow.?. I don’t replant, cause the stress is to much on them, so I keep them in the same 3 gallon pot,.. what do recommend I use knowing I don’t transplant?
@greenbudpacker88933 жыл бұрын
happy is for seedlings/early veg, it's pretty light. strawberry is for flower. Ocean is supposed to be like a late veg/flower but it's best mixed with one of the other two. Strawberry is good but it has bad drainage, not enough pearlite. It's always good to let the stuff dry out and re-wet it before use, to avoid bugs. Any soil with fertilizers attracts bugs. You should really transplant though to avoid rootbinding and overwatering. it's real easy to overwater with a little plant in a big pot. And step it up to a 5 gal at the end for better yield. Just water it then wait a day so the soil is still moist and sticks together. If you throw some recharge or any product with mycorrhiza on the roots during transplant you won't really see any shock unless you're like picking it up by the stalk or trying to remove the old soil lol
@greenbudpacker88933 жыл бұрын
if you're gonna go with foxfarm you don't have to buy all 3, or avoid the ocean forest entirely. Personally I start in a cup of happy, then transplant into a 1 gal of happy, then into a 3 gal with mixed ocean and happy, then end in a 5 gal with just ocean. could do the same with strawberry instead of ocean but you'll have to add a little pearlite. Either way the soil has nutrients so you don't really have to add anything but cal-mag and mycorrhiza for like almost a month after each transfer. The myco helps with root growth and nutrient uptake

PSS. I add dry amendments and compost for at least 2-3 weeks with any soil I use. I never use fresh soil out of the bag unless it's just a light top dress. I always compost it first. I've notice over the last couple years foxfire soil is damper straight out of the bag, as to before it was so dry water would bead on top of the soil before it soaked in. My guess with the extra dampness, the soil is cooking inside the bag before it is opened and used.

I was actually reading the back of the bag on ocean forest( cause i have one here) and it says its good for seedling, you and many others say its hot soil mostly better for flowering but nitrogen is the highest ingredient, so wouldn't that make it best for vedgge and not flowering?
@ExoticMidz3 жыл бұрын
Sorry for asking but like when everyone makes these soils do they just trial and error and form their own or is there a base building to follow, just trying to figure out where to start because I either wanna craft my own super soil or a living soil for next run

I put a gallon chunk of happy frog inside 5 gallons of ocean forest. This way, the seedling starts off in happy frog and by the time the roots hit the 'hot' soil, they are big enough to handle it. It has worked well.

IDK, But We put about 2 inches of Strawberry Fields in the bottom and Ocean Forest and Happy Frog 50/50 , It was about a Month into Flower and seems like about the time the Roots got down to the bottom, Looked like it stated burning them up,, We had 2 others at the same time with only Ocean Forest and Happy Frog 50/50 and it seemed like they did Fine.. I'm thinking Strawberry Fields was the HOT one,, But Like a lot of people out here We just Started, So We could be Wrong.. But this time We only doing the 50/50 mix and we will try to let you know how that goes,, Thank You, 420

Yes, I agree 👍 Ocean Forest does Run HOT 🔥 From California. I'm just starting out. Investing in pots, then 10 gallon buckets now, 15 gallon. Plus equipment because my city is messing with our water (our ph is at 8.3) so I also needed chemicals. Now that I've adjusted my ph. I need to invest in drying and storing. So, if anyone has any ideas how to dry on a Social Security budget, please drop me a comment. See, in this community, I can ask questions like this because here in the 420Scene, we are like a big family. I do HIGHLY recommend joining the Pateron program. Worth it's weight in fat sticky buds.

What’s your thoughts on recycled soil?
@curve57462 жыл бұрын
Everytime I use OF i get nutrient burn. Sometimes it kills the plant. I'm not using anything else when this occurs. I thought it was me doing something and I discovered you need to up your PH when watering if using OF. I run my PH around 6.8 and it has really helped although doesn't completely fix the issue
@420scene2 жыл бұрын
That’s because ocean forest is loaded with worm, castings, bat, guano, and then feather meal on top of it so that right there is three forms of nitrogen all hitting your plants. Some people say that you don’t get nutrient burn, but how could you not with all those amendments that are in there. Also dropped it water pH level to 5.8 and 6.3.

I re-use my old FFOF and FFHF. First I dump it in the soil bin with the red wiggler compost worms. Then I amend a little, some bat guano, kelp, little more perlite, some home-made compost with our family chicken manure. It has been so much better than when I started and I will never use store bought again. Recycling is the way to go bro. P.S. love the vids, you've helped me find my groove in my garden. :) Cheers bro.

I read somewhere that fox farm soils are good for up to 2 years from the date stamped on the bag. Apparently there's a date stamped on there somewhere. Idk, I haven't checked but maybe this explains why sometimes the soil is hot or not so hot. I guess that the fresher the soil, the hotter it is.?.?

I ran across the channel while back and I agree I live next door to a farmer who raises livestock and get good manure compost by the wheelbarrow I make my own soil regular old Kellogg's raised bed soil. Using DTE nutrients to amend with a 30-day breakdown before using. You showed me it's all about preparation when using DTE. Or you can just tea Bio-Live & Neem seed for about 32 hours for a jump start. Thanks brah...

I once read that Fox Farm soils are made in two different locations in the US . It sounds like the one on the West coast has consistent soil. The stuff on the East coast (which is what i've got) kills my plants. I don't know if it's too hot, but the ph is down at 5.5 (because the woodchips in the soil are acidic) It's been nothing but a disaster for me whenever I've tried to use Oceanic Blend. However, my plants LOVE the FF Strawberry Fields premix soil. But those have been at 6.8ph. So my advice for anyone using FF soils, do yourself a favor and check the PH before using it. Good luck, stay awesome, and happy growing!

I use pro mix, and gen hydro big three. I try to keep it simple. It's important to remember that the vast majority of a plants bulk comes from the air, not the soil. Alot of pre mix is way too hot for cannabis. I get huge yields by keeping it as simple as possible. But once again it's an art and everybody develops their own way. Your content rocks bro. Peace.

I got a quick question bro, do you know if measuring the ph of the runoff on your soil is an accurate way of testing the ph of the medium and is it as accurate as using a high quality soil tester? I don't have a soil ph metre so going of runoff
@drnaughty93123 жыл бұрын
measuring runoff itself is inaccurate. you want to do a slurry test for accurate ppm readings. Let your soil dry out mostly, dig down about 2 in into the soil and then fill a shot glass with the soil at that level. pour that into a glass along with a shot glass of distilled water. stir for a min or two to make sure its saturated. Then you can measure the ph of the soil and the ppms accurately

I think the burned plants are just really fresh batches. You see most hydro stores sell more ocean forest then other brands. Atleat where I am I see 30+ pallets go within a few weeks. People ordering on Amazon or online are most likely getting older batches that are more composted because they've been sitting along time.

Recipe 420 has worked well for me. I now have a 25 gallon nursery pot that ive been working on for +2 years by adding kitchen scraps from banana peels & eggs shells to coffee grounds and almost everything thing in between, followed by a light water and a light till from time to time. 👌 The soil looks super fresh and organic with plenty of worm castings 🪱 at this point but it "still can use some down to earth amendments." 👍
@michealkingsborough67053 жыл бұрын
Dude what else can I say but I Love your content and You have definitely helped me be a better plant Daddy. 💯 Respect! 🤜🤛 I've noticed in the past that Ocean Forrest being hot depends on soil quantity, larger pots get hot while smaller pots did not. I have been using ProMix BX for quite a few years now in a mix of 75% ProMix, 25% Organic worm castings and ameding with all organic Blood Meal, Bone Meal and Kelp Meal per package instructions. I use no other ammendments whatsoever and do not us any secondary nutrients, I top dress feed using the same amendments above along with my own organic compost. I water using water from my small garden fish pond, taking it sraight from the bottom of my filtration system through a ball valve I installed when I built the system. I also use compost tea made using that same pond water and my own compost which I apply every 3rd watering for that KICK. I will never again use pre mixed/amended soils, to be truly organic and for my own liking I have far more control over the health of my soil and in turn the health of my plants.

I'm doing a Miracle-Gro experiment this year...I don't care what anyone says. I just did a compost tea and brought the PH in the soil down to 6.5... the babies look amazing! I just know that I can't add a lot of nutes outside of with my compost tea
