Goodbye Mark, our dear son

Mark, our rescue Golden Retriever, during his last hours. He had been suffering from very advanced cancer of the bones and throat.
He was the alpha of our pack of dogs, a fighter - but the last 2 days he had given up his will to live - he stopped eating, drinking and could not stand for more than a minute. He was in terrible pain.
I have been photographing and filming Mark and my other furkids since the day they became a part of the family. I do so because I love them. And this love extends even when they are sick, till the day they have to leave us, and after death.
Many have asked what was the purpose of this video. Here is why. When I was a child, my very first Golden Retriever was diagnosed too with cancer. At the time, my mother and I thought the best thing to do was to let her die naturally. To not 'play God'. She suffered painfully for weeks, yet we still told ourselves not to 'play God'. During her last minutes on earth, she was in such pain she cried a high pitched whine and her whole body shook violently then she went limp. At that point, I knew it was wrong not to have euthanized her weeks ago. I knew, in my heart, that the true reason that my mother and I did not, was not because we loved her, but because we were too selfish to let her go.
I vowed never to repeat this mistake again.
All of us bring our furkids to our home, to be a part of our family. We make efforts from the first day to bring safety, protection, love and happiness to him/her. And I feel, it is our duty to do just that on his/her last day on earth too. Not one of pain, suffering and sadness.
It is my heartfelt wish that more people can see why I, and other people, choose this path. It is a selfless thing to do. And it is the right thing to do. And because I have never seen another video documenting the procedures behind the process here on YT, I felt it would help others understand it better.
Some felt that it was undignifying posting him at this time. Questioning if I myself, would want to be videoed on my death bed. The answer would be yes. I would feel grateful, loved and blessed that friends and family were there till my last breath, and cared enough to want to remember me this way.
And to my Mark, I miss you and hope you are doing well at Rainbow Bridge.

It's so, so terribly sad. I had a German Shepherd for 13 years, and after his death 10 years ago, I still do not know what to do with that pain. I hate to say this, but there were people in my life who passed away, and the depth of grief wasn't even close. I believe because they are unconditionally loving, giving and incredible in every sense, and they give us so much joy, protection, love.

What a bunch of attention whores. seriously. ive been in this moment and not once did I think to take a video , a picture, or anything. i was too busy locked into caring for my dog. this is a video of a dying dog meant to put their owner on a pedestal of grief. greif is a selfish emotion. end of story.

It’s obvious that Mark was much loved and how heartbroken you were when you had to say goodbye. As someone else said, you showed your love in releasing him from his pain and taking it on yourselves. Heart wrenching, but cathartic. Thanks for sharing. My dalmatian died about 5 years ago but I was away at college when it happened, so never got closure. Watching this video has helped me bring back the grief and work through it. I'm so sorry for your loss.

Thank you for posting this. I salute your deep humanity. I live in Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic.I lost Sally 10 days ago. She was a semi street dog. A neighbor sold their house and couldn't take Sally where they were moving so she stayed with the house. The man who bought the house doesn't live there. He uses the grounds as a workshop renovating used SUV's. He would give Sally veterinary care if she was really sick but he wasn't around the property every day so I started feeding her several years ago. Ten days ago she was resting underneath his vehicle. When he got in to leave he checked that she came out from under. Then he got distracted with a phone call and when he started the car he didn't realize she had gone back underneath and he ran over her when he left. He didn't realize it. She crawled about fifty feet and took about half an hour to die. I had fed her that morning and she had nuzzled me and I had petted her and had a good visit with her.

I have 3 amazing sons and 1 full of joy over protective daughter but when the time comes to say goodbye I'll know they had a great life and mom :)

I've grown up with dogs. Some cats, but mostly dogs. Such giving creatures. They give such unconditional love. Treated fairly, they are such a comfort. I've watched this video a number of times and I'm not sure why. It tears my heart, but at the same time causes me to remember the dogs I've had in the past. I remember them and thank them.

Our poor little girl's hips are starting to give, she's turning 13 soon and she's all gray. She sure does have the spirit of a puppy though. We love our little Zoey, we've had her since I was 10 years old. She's been a wonderful loving little chub of a dog. And my poor mom is afraid of the day she'll go. I know how badly it hurts to have to put an animal down, my small flock of baby Parakeets that helped me out of my depression were in the later stages of PBFD and were always feeling ill. I had to put some of them down myself, don't worry it was quick, the others I thankfully got some money to euthanize. You can keep them alive until the last moment, but when you know that there's nothing but pain and misery awaiting their future, it's more of a sin to keep them alive. Rest in peace Mark, love to your family. And peace to my sweet little baby birds.

No matter what negative, ignorant and/or hurtful comments appear here, the message is a simple, irrefutable one: LOVE YOUR LOVED ONES. Appreciate your time with them because it is always temporary. Do-overs are guaranteed to no one. Losing those you love, while very painful, is a small price to pay in return for their company along the way.

Seeing this made me cry, I'm so sorry to see that you lost your best friend. I have a Golden Retriever who is a year old and I hug her up every chance and I every day I get with her because their lives are so short. Love them like people, and if people can't understand that then they are the ones who should never own a pet.

Hands down just got a puppy a week ago. And in my past I was told to look out for a bunny. Over the night that day, it started to thunder a lot. Very loud bangs. When we came to the bunny next day it's heart had stopped ... Today was a day with the same amount of thunder. So I ran in to check my boy. Very much awake and alive. After that I went to KZbin and googled around to see if dogs could have heart attacks. Found this video that made me cry for a short moment ....

I'm shocked at how much I didn't cry... maybe because all of my tears are tapped out after watching the ending scene of Homeward Bound... But watching this CERTAINLY made me hug and kiss my dog who is still young... but watching these kinds of things reminds me of the bitter truth that one day I will no longer have him... and now, as I was typing that, I started to tear up... the thought itself hurts so much... anyone who has ever had a dog understands.

One of the worst feelings in my life is the decision I needed to make was when to put a pet down. I had to do that on 3 different occasions. I stayed with them, petting, hugging, and talking to them until they took their last breath, and stayed with them as long as I could without breaking down. I saved the breaking down for when I got back in my car to drive home. I never want to go through that again. I hope the pets I have now, go om their own, but I know that will not happen.

Lost my golden last night... We were going to put him down today, but he didn't last. About 11:15 I went down to say goodnight, knowing I probably wouldn't have a chance to again.
