Slight correction: Spotify/Netflix/Discord apps can be installed on the Deck, but more to my point, YMWV for a lot of features - which is much less a concern on Windows. Spotify has a Linux app that's supposedly not supported my the company but made out of love by some devs working there? Netflix does not have an officially supported Linux native app. 3rd party and browser surely exists, but at that point I'm good. Discord works, but can be temperamental with some features from what I'm reading - especially hopping between desktop and console mode.

@@X862go It's improving, but yeah, there's still a ways to go in that field. Most of the focus I think has been on compatibility for the games before the modding tools. Nexus has a version of their mod manager on github for linux though it's in such early stages it only supports Stardew Valley for now. Back when Lethal Company was huge, R2ModMan would work for the game on Windows and Linux. It's admitedly a pain in the ass, I was able to mod Sonic Adventures 1 and 2 using ProtonTricks

@@DNKI PC gaming requires always a bit of tinkering and research. All the problems you are mentioning are fixable. So what exactly is the problem here. If you aren't willing to put in the effort you should go back to console gaming. The thing that gets me about all these Steam Deck competitors is none of them actually compete on the touchpads and controller layout customization. All other things being roughly equal, that stands out to me. There are lots of games in my steam library that are not controller compatible and the addition of the touchpads make them portable on a deck.

You can customise your controls using the Steam UI on Windows. The lack of touchpads suck, but maybe the games you play might be compatible with the touch screen? There's the upcoming Orange Pi Neo which is a fellow Linux based handheld that also has touch pads, and will be significantly more powerful than the Steam Deck.

Also Windows uses Windows Explorer 2.0 or the official name " Microsoft Edge " how many people unironically use Microsoft Edge? The best feature of Windows Explorer was the uninstallation that was stripped out of Edge. I don't use Edge, I have used Brave for about more than 5 years. Windows is riddled with poor security, unlike Linux, where viruses are much less likely due to just being different. I have both Windows and Linux, the auto-updates, can't uninstall Edge, and generally annoying search bar instantly makes me hate Windows 10. I'm currently doing a massive remodel on my house and my PC is in storage. The Steam Deck is my only way to game right now. I don't see any other handheld competing with SD. It's so versatile and I was surprised how little it mattered dropping from 1440p to 720p with the smaller screen. I've played more games from my backlog mostly because I can't play shooters with a controller so it's forced me to actually look at my backlog. And learning Linux in desktop mode was nowhere near as challenging as I thought it was going to be. So much that I'm considering dual booting when I get my PC back.

It's just depends on what you're looking for. $800 for a supplementary PC is arguably better as a handheld than an entry-level gaming laptop. Yeah you lose out on a small dGPU, but those come with considerable tradeoffs - size, battery life, and cheapo build and even the form factor. For a lot of people, the product segment is cool because of the built in controller. And while the specs might not seem amazing head to head, pushing graphics on a smaller screen actually does make for better perceived visuals. 1080p low on a 15" display looks way worse on a more pixel dense 7" 1080p one IMO. $800 is a lot given the landscape, but it isn't the most unreasonable ask

@@DNKI Discord and Spotify does run natively in Linux, no Proton/Wine emulation. Not sure whether it would meet your expectations but it at least works well for me. As for getting it to launch on console mode, there's a workaround to "add non-Steam games into Steam", but to make it look as if it's a "native" Steam app would take some effort. I suppose that's one thing that Valve could improve on with regards to integrating non-Steam apps that is from the Flatapp "store" at least. One thing I would say that is unexpected for me is how well the console mode deals with multiple applications at once (running Spotify and Discord in the background, for example). It's definitely something you wouldn't expect from another console like the Switch.

Considering the repairability, the price, the OS and that Asus hardware is not known for its quality (I have a gaming notebook from Asus... ). Seriously, for a handheld, repairability (that includes the official availability of original replacement parts to a fair price) should weigh 50% in the overall result. There is no way I'll go back to Windows. If a game does not run on Linux, so be it. There are enough other games available.

I don't care about having Windows on a handheld because I've learned to enjoy Linux. I bought the Steam Deck to play my indie backlog. For AAA games, I'd rather use my PC with a large display. For that purpose, the Steam Deck's performance is sufficient. Lately, I've been using it more in desktop mode, docked to a 32:9 monitor for light gaming while watching KZbin videos, and the performance has been fine. While the ROG Ally X is cool, the Steam Deck meets all my needs, so I won't upgrade unless it stops working.

Also, I’m not saying the Steam Deck is perfect in terms of hardware reliability, but ASUS does not have the best track record, and time will tell if the Ally X has the same hardware issues as the Ally. Also, I think the Steam Deck just works for more people, being much easier to pick up and play, along with the mentioned SteamOS power management, especially in suspend. The only thing I’d like to see on the Steam Deck now is dual USB-C and a hardware upgrade, but the Deck still runs a lot of my games perfectly fine! Good video, Denki.
