One of Singapore’s oldest HDB estates, Tanglin Halt is fondly remembered for its iconic 10-storey flats that appeared on the nation’s first-ever $1 note, as well as the food stalls that still continue to dish out heritage hawker fare at the old wet market. But this year, everything is about to change. Tanglin Halt is undergoing the biggest redevelopment for public housing in Singapore - the Selective En bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS). History buff and food blogger Dr Leslie Tay takes a walk down memory lane, but as he soaks in the township’s old-world charm and meets the hawkers and residents of Tanglin Halt, he discovers a community whose bonds are deeply rooted in the coming of age of a nation.

Improve building is easy but bringing back kampung spirt is hard. Once kampung spirit removed, it takes years to build or never. Government has spent so much money trying to build kampung spirt and still can't get it back... Haiz

No matter how bad the condition of the place is, this place holds very special memories to people whom have stayed/grew up there. My grandparents stayed there before they passed on, my mother grew up there and I lived there for a few years too. The memories I had with my late grandparents were also made there. Gonna miss this place!!

I not sure whether it is only Singapore or the whole world affected, but the loss of kampung spirit is very real. I guess it is particularly bad in Singapore due to the policies of extreme openness to foreigners & globalization, & other factors causing locals to lose the bond with each other. The 80s were a golden era that can never be retreived back. A country that knows the price of everything but the value of none is only going backwards

I had lived at Margaret Drive from 1956 to 1966 and I can sense the nostalgia. I am living in Ang Moh country now and when I visited Margaret Drive in 2018/19 what a change! The notorious river inundated annually has been concreted and buried. Queenstown Tech and Hua Yi School building were still there I think. My Strathmore school was gone. The Mosque at the corner of Tanglin Rd and Margaret Drive was still there. I had a childhood friend who is still living in the revamped area and was our tour guide. The massive sweet roti bun freshly made at Stirling road was something I savoured then and their homemade kaya. The itinerant satay guy that came weekly in our estate, his satay gravy was out of this world. The diluted gravy sold these days is an affront to his memory. HDB could put up a model like miniature historical township each time the area is tore down for posterity and history. Modern Singapore bereft of 3 dimensional history can be a sad place.

There's many more iconic shops in Tanglin Halt. Yan kee Econ minimart, prata, wanton mee etc. Some of the older memories long gone also include the uncle shop selling video games, where ppl would battle it out in KOF in the shops too. Besides Hock Ann there was another confectionery called Pattaya (or Patiya?) with even more traditional vibes in its arch window shop counter also dishing out those traditional chocolate chip toppings cakes. Welcome to Tanglin Halt.

My best childhood!!! Lived there from 1974 to around 1995. Teary eyed seeing the same bakery I would get my sugar rush with my late dad still there to the end. I remember the empty lot in the middle of the hawker ctr/store hub area filled with Chinese auctions and seventh month show. And that wet market back when they used to sell live chicken. Mom used to pick one and the slaughter it right there. Tanglin Halt chap lau!!

My mum got married in 1965 there. I was born at blk 58 in 1967 and then moved to blk 59 till late 1990s. Used to play at the nearby playground and feed the goats in the small farm nxt to the church .Wld go there in the afternoon and waited for the train to pass by and waved at the passengers. We knew our neighbours very well, from the entire block till the few blocks front and back. That's the 'kampung' I know, where there is no racial divide. Anyone remembers a catonese couple selling beef noodle during the 1970s? They liked to quarrel with each other when business was brisk and usually it was. Wonder if they moved to another location after they renovated the hawker centre? I think the renovation was a bad idea. Another one is the friend carrot cake, with tiny bits of mushroom. Anyone know whether he is still selling?

Ruyi vegetarian was also there in 1960s and should be featured. It is one of the most popular stall in Tanglin Halt. Would love to hear their history as well. Used to live in Tanglin Halt in the 1960s and 70s at Block 52, and studied in Tanglin Primary School. My mum used to make me walk to the old market to buy the duck bee hoon, and also further up to buy the veg bee hoon. Both her favourites. I loved the unique carrot cake opposite the duck bee hoon in those days.

Sometimes it is utterly sad that old estate utimately fate is demolishing, where in reality, there are senior living here over their lifetimes and get so rooted here like many other old estate, needing asking them to move..I am worried in some belief if old people move to another new place, how long will they live. There is some taboo on this. Actually old estate of hdb are build of better quality or brick and bigger size than now that why they can last longer and look firmer than new flat, only needing upgrading through painting or refurbishment only. Sometimes do not understand the root rationale of demolishing..these places so nostalgia in their own way with senior doing business so long.. Always sacrifice old senior rooted home for young development and ask them to move at this old age.. I feel sad for them honestly... Now only in memory for next generation..

They tear down the flat never mind, but the surrounding shops and market shouldn't tear down. Cos not like any of the new HDB development have sufficient amenities or know how to design. I'm sure the people who bought the BTO don't want to go hungry like those in Punggol and Sengkang. We want more markets and town centres. We certainly wont b able to experience living like tht again. Btw..I hate the Pasir Ris market..its horrible. It's so small n crowded, jst a row of shop houses with a narrow 5' walkway. But sadly they are not picked up by many younger generations now so it's not surprising someone from the dialect does not speak it now.

The place/flats look really outdated and old. Time for a refresh of the estate. It is not national monument or heritage please.

They should have kept Forfar House as a heritage building. It was the first high rise in the suburb, IIRC. The 7-storey flats at Dakota Cres have gone the way of the dodo. Now Tanglin Halt is getting levelled. Sad end.

This reporter for this segment talks and acts like as if he is gonna lose his everything, because Tanglin Halt will be torn down for revamp. If he likes Tanglin Halt old estate so much, then give up his current comfortable home, get a flat there, and move to Tanglin Halt?

I used to work there. Remember the ang chia police Reserve unit 2, 5, 6 n 8. Every morning i will pass the roadside market n the hawkers will watch out for the tee goo the hawker inspectors n to run away when they come. Those were the days.

Young Singaporeans are all about the hipster vibe and they are not going to put in the hours needed. So Singapore needs to import young people from China so the hawker centers can pass down knowledge. Otherwise all of these stalls will just die out.

Ther is no such thing as walk down memory lane in Singapore. Evrything gt torn down. Frm kampong n thn flat still hv to move. I'm frm blk 66 Tanglin Halt. So so sad to see its finally gonna b taken down. Seen quite a few local shops close down whn ShengSiong started operating. Then, it ws already killing small time shopkeepers n marketeers. I felt sorry fr thm..n I'l definitely buy frm thm instead of ShengSiong. As such, we build strong bonds, local vendors n me. Whn I shifted to Costa Ris after the en-bloc, u cant get tht same feeling in the new location. Thers no veg seller tht will throw in few bunches of vegs in yr basket fr free..or throw in 1 or 2 fishes extra..brush off 10 or 20 cents worth of curry leaves, or few pandan leaves. All tht is gone.. the hairdressers, the alteration shop, tht bakery tht bake fresh bread. I love the French bread. I use to order like 20pcs whenever I go to melaka as my aunties love it too. My God, too many fond memories, I'm crying. I still go to my letterbox to chk my mails n I'l go up to my unit jst to take a look. Nobody lives ther since I moved. N I'l walk around the neighbourhood, chat a little with whoever shopkeepers thts still ther. My next marketing will b at Tanglin Halt market soon b4 its bye bye for good. 😪

My grandaunt used to stay in Block 33. With Tanglin Halt getting consigned to the history books, it's pointless now for route 61 to ply Commonwealth Drive (South).
