John and Steve remember The Band’s Garth Hudson, who died recently at the age of 87. Hudson was one of four Canadians in a Canadian-American band credited with changing music with their critically acclaimed blend of rock, soul, country and blues. Hudson was a musical genius who played a number of instruments, including organ, piano, clarinet , accordion, piano, trumpet and saxophone. The boys also play a 1983 interview John had with The Band drummer Levon Helm. #vinylcommunity

Garth Hudson was born in Windsor but actually grew up in London Ontario Canada from age 3 and went to Medway High School then Western University in London Ontario studying music. He truly was a very well trained musician. Also I saw an interview where he said he was asked to join The Hawks by Levon and Robbie when he was at the Brass Rail in London Ontario watching the Hawks play. He was playing already in another band. Conway Twitty played this bar a lot and apparently wrote one of his hits there after hours jamming. Except for Levon all the Band members grew up around London Ontario. Simcoe for Rick Danko, Stratford for Richard Manuel , and Robbie spent a lot of time at Brantford 6 Nations. Back in the late 50's early 60's I guess there were lots of places to play around this area. I was born a little too late for this but it is pretty cool to think all these musicians came from this area and had such an impact on Music world wide. As you said it really influenced Eric Clapton to change his style and I have heard interviews with Fairport Convention members who said the same thing. They werre inspired by The Band to explore their own British musical folk roots. Look also at The Beatles and how they started dressing and looking at this time period. The Band's music is so different then most of the music going on at that time. It was all mostly California pyschedilc rock and it was like a breath of fresh air. It still sounds fresh today. Good music and songs are timeless. The Weight being my favourite and the piano on that by Garth is superb!!!!! Levon really mentioned Garth a lot in your interview so he must have felt the same thing!!!!

Rock of Ages is one of my favorite live albums. Very underrated to me way better than Last Waltz

Wasn't the album "Music from Big Pink" recorded in a professional studio, though, not from the original home studio recordings? I forget where I read that.
