Barney, Harris, Wojo, Dietrich and Levitt say goodbye to each other and to the 12th Precinct when their building is sold off by the city. I watched this final episode when it first aired and can't believe that was 40 years ago.

Seeing this clip in 2023, it's bittersweet to think only Gail and Linden are still around. It had great writing, comedic and dramatic, under the sure hand of Danny Arnold.

To borrow a quote from a movie 'time is the fire is which we burn'. Yes time has consumed some of this cast and many others we cherished from other series. But the one thing this thing called time can't consume is our memories of the time. Thanks for posting the wonderful memories.

I just binged the whole series on Amazon PrimeTV recently. I always loved and respected Barney Miller. But now, after watching it again, I can say this show was ahead of it's time and is one of the best television programs that transcended several genres - comedy, police procedural and drama. Thank you everyone who made Barney Miller what it is, a true gem!

Really takes away from the emotional closure of the series. Not even the same clip. You can thank TV syndication these days and commercial greed for editing out stuff to make room for more ads. Another reason to block as many ads as possible.

Writing and performances still resonate fifty years later. That is some huge hug between Gail and Linden. Any fan of the show got a lump in the throat when Levitt bows his head into his Captain's chest. I think Arnold's decision to go out on a high note was correct. But we miss them all.

In my personal opinion, the worst sort of series finale is when the characters go their separate ways. I enjoy the thought of the characters continuing to go on, as usual, once the cameras stop. Really, the only situations in which I find the separations satisfying is when the characters have been through years of hardship, like trapped on an island. The great exception was "Good Times". Even though they moved out of the ghetto, in the final episode, they all moved on up. It was heartwarming to see that the plans made separately were like fate working to keep most of them together, living in a better place. In Barney Miller's case, I would have loved the story to end with the squad was being relocated together into a more modern station. Really, it would have been like a reward, since the building they were leaving looked like you would need a tetanus shot, after visiting.
