I feel this, why have the same glorious beard you have in real life, when you can have an even MORE GLORIOUS beard in vrchat? Don't suppose the hyper realistic avatars would have crazy crazy customization? Like head shape, eye shape/ type etc. Yanno, still hyper realistic, but however we want it to look
@KennKuun

I can't think of many people who would prefer it over a webcam. Most regular consumers aren't going to want to look the way they do in real life; at most it'd be a novelty that isn't worth the cost. And I can't think of a type of company that would prefer an expensive photorealistic headset over a laptop with a webcam. The only market I could imagine for that sort of thing is maybe military. The next closest market would be companies that produce physical goods, using them to demonstrate concepts for prototypes without having to actually build them, but they wouldn't need a photorealistic avatar. The most they'd need is some company-standard blank slate avatar or something.

The point of realistic avatars is to cater to certain eventual VR demographics and/or social apps. How many people are gonna put the funny meme avatar they use on twitter as their LinkedIn profile pic?

The hyper real human representation inside VR is probably being aimed more at businesses. Aside from being able to make some really cool Ted Talks and eLearnings, I suspect many companies Meta is trying to sell to don't want to buy into the concept of doing all their meetings in VR using cartoon avatars.
@freals0975
@freals0975 2 жыл бұрын
That is probably the objective, but more representational avatars will eventually have to be adopted by the community eventually for it to expand to the main stream. My prediction is that many businesses will use dress codes, rather than mandating hyperrealism, but the technology is very impressive.
@o6dukeleto
@o6dukeleto 2 жыл бұрын
This is almost a requirement to do business in VR. Otherwise companies will stick with video conferencing (zoom, etc.) because you can read peoples reactions much more intuitively with real faces and expressions. VR has other business advantages (such as using virtual white boards, etc.) but one of the main things that VR will have to compete with the ability to see real reactions/expressions. Outside of business, the real avatar probably has less value as many people don't even like using their real name in gaming, etc.

@@o6dukeleto I agree entirely. I also suspect most companies will stick with video conferencing regardless because it's easier to set up and has less steps. Even after the widespread availability of inexpensive VR headsets with accurate facial capture I doubt the technology will be trusted. :/

I know the "mobile vr" was a floppy but the problem in it was the lackluster controls, bulkiness of even the simplest setups and the fact that you actually needed compatible phones.... But a tech like that on the video would be the perfect to pair with a phone. Any glasses would be mobile vr and pc vr at the same time without actually needing any of the internal bulkiness from the needed component of processing.

For PCVR it should be possible and things like VorpX give a taste of that, but following the money it's better for a studio to cater development to things like the Quest 2 which doesn't have much power thus the PS2 graphics. A standalone headset able to render modern graphics would basically have to be an Xbox Series X strapped to your head.
@mylynes8153
@mylynes8153 2 жыл бұрын
Processing power may eventually become a non issue entirely. The reason being that the rise of 5G and game streaming services (like Stadia or GeForce) would allow anybody with a good internet connection to stream ultra graphics. Once this is streamlined, hyper realistic characters wouldn’t be too much of a problem. All your VR would have to do is focus on its tracking and screen quality

In my opinion I really like the idea of having a hyper human representation of myself virtually. Sometimes I do just want to be myself, and in Virtual Reality I find that difficult when I have to look like a skeleton or whatever. It’s also huge and useful for serious business and social uses. It’s something VR has, but is hard to realise through for the average person through avatars. In a pandemic world, imagine seamlessly transitioning into VR communication just by launching a ‘classroom’ app or something, while being able to read peoples face expressions. It feels minor but it’s actually a huge step in the right direction for a lot of people.

Even if they move to holographic displays, you will still want a goggle type form factor. The immersion will be lost completely if you dont block out your peripheral vision and outside light. And don't forget about perfect inside-out tracking on all headsets, because, let's face it, tracking base stations will either become obsolete or the enthusiast's hyper precision tool in a couple years.. 7:40 this also got me thinking, with how flawless airlink is if you have the right setup, I hope oculus makes a PCVR set in the future that's extremely small and practically saves all space for battery and screen resolution and has all of it's power dependant on your PC through airlink

More likely force feedback gloves so they can emulate buttons. Lucid gloves can present as index controllers. Once those take off, it won't be long for others to follow, esp given they're cheaper to make then buying the controllers. It would be a really neat way and something we could maybe even use as often as our phones, just having a full on visually stunning system (which probably wouldn't have alot of functionality initially) however would be something that would interest alot of people in the industry especially if it's reasonably affordable and produced enough for people to casually wear/use in public.

@fordalels 2 жыл бұрын
For how they look right now, I'd assume that they would put either some sort of curved frame at the ears if it's too heavy, or straight up just weights at the back. Given how the holographic strips are hanging up off the lenses, if they can be curved then they likely would either be curved around the top of the head, or the sides by the temples or the frame of the glasses. I'd assume you wouldn't want to sleep with these on (as you would with normal glasses) as they probably won't be sturdy enough for if you move in your sleep.

Being able yo use ar and vr paired with my pc on the same lightweight comfortable device is all I want. The headsets are wayyy too heavy currently, adding over 1 pound of weight on your head. Will we jump straight from vr headsets to ar/vr glasses immediately? No, they will continue to get smaller incrementally just like smart phones. All the way until contacts come out. Now do I think contacts will overtak glasses? Not at all. They never will. Even colored contacts are uncomfortable, stuffing them with tech sounds even more uncomfortable, but they will exist, and after that? Replacing our eyeballs with vr/ar hardware. Maybe 50 years in the future I predict we will go straight cyberpunk. But for now I'm just waiting for better lighter more comfortable ar/vr hardware.

I'm pretty new to VR and I've only ever used the Valve Index and Oculus Quest 2, but I wouldn't even mind using a full on helmet if it meant an amazing FOV, higher resolution, and was wireless, so these holographic glasses form factor "headsets" are super exciting. About realistic avatars, I think it would do a lot for me if I could hang out with people I already know in real life in VR with these avatars. Nowadays I live pretty far away from my friends and family so it would be cool to be able to hang out with them and see their faces. I already play games online with my friends, so while hanging out in VRChat does wonders, after some time it doesn't feel very different than just hanging out with them in any other game where they're represented by a game avatar.

I'm GREATLY looking forward to your treadmill 2.0 video. It's not super high on my desires list for VR, but if it ends up being really great with little downside, I could see myself paying $1k for it. That's what the index itself cost after all. That said, what IS super high on my VR desires list is lighter, but more importantly, much clearer headsets. So the holographic thing interests me. I have to wonder though, will it REALLY kick off and be the new standard? I've never heard of the "light has depth" thing before and as far as I knew stereoscopy was THE way your eyes/brain interpret depth. It seems to work perfectly fine as is, so I wonder if the extra complexity and presumably expense is even worth it. However, if they are right in that this is the best/only way to get hyper-resolution on small and light lenses to the point of glasses form factors, that alone would be worth it, absolutely. Facebook's hyper-realistic avatars: big old NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO to that. For the reasons you said, and also for the reason that there is NO WAY that won't be uncanny valley nightmare fuel in the real (heh) world of VR as opposed to their lab demos. I've never really been an attention seeker and have looked down on that kind of stuff, but I gotta admit seeing myself in a video feels pretty cool :D

I think size and weight will be the biggest breakthrough for VR. Current headsets are fairly big and bulky. The units alone weight like 600+ grams and that's not even counting the weight of the cable and perhaps some accessories. It's a bit of a hassle to use. I'm upgrading to a small, lightweight one that fits my needs the moment I'm able to do that.

Just open up the sales section in the Rift software. It's broken since early 21 and there basically haven't been any proper sales anymore on Rift games either on the website. It looks abandoned, it feels abandoned, it is abandoned. It's especially sad since the Oculus exclusives like Lone Echo, Asgards Wrath or Stormland belong to the best VR games that do exist. I just hope that they'll put more focus there though with the AirLink going, especially with the dongle they're going to come up with to get it going hassle-free. I mean, what's the point in all that when they don't deliver software themselves?

As somebody who lives far from my family and has a community of real-life friends scattered around the world, the possibility to meet "them" (i.e. an hyper-realistic avatar of them) in a virtual environment (maybe even with some haptic feedback that allows the illusion of "physical contact" would be bliss. There are more uses for VR than just fun and work...

Anyone who's got access to the sales and is interested without being against Metabookulus and their current account policy, should definately take a shot at it right now. We're in the deciding time for the ultimate direction VR will take. We're seeing some of the most powerful tech companies in the world dive in and push it forward as much as they can. Pushing and improving the hardware, the software, the usability, the features and the experience to the limits of current day technology. So whether VR becomes cemented for a long time as a niche pastime or as pervasive as it is in something like Ready Player One I think will be decided in the next five years. The main hurdle to overcome, for me, is convenience. The ability to pick up a small pair of glasses, pop them on and and go is what will suddenly widen the audience, most people simply don't want to strap a large headset to their face, but a pair of glasses? No problem.
@ScientistMan96
@ScientistMan96 2 жыл бұрын
For me, the Quest 2 solved the convenience issue. The main problem I see now is space, such as what the Kat walk aims to solve. Not everyone can afford to dedicate an entire room to being completely empty for VR, so until they can make something that makes full immersion VR not require full amounts of space, be it using a omni-treadmill, or an anime-esque Nervegear, or something else then I don't see it growing much more. Yeah, having nothing but a pair of glasses for VR would be great, but it doesn't change the fact I'm going to punch my wall if I don't force myself to remember it's there.

Hi Thrill Just want to say a huge thanks to you for doing these, i absolutely love them. I have my Quest 2 in repairs currently because of a dead pixel and the right controller joystick drifting. I had it in repair for a month, and during the past week, i watched the past monthS of Tuesday Newsday and i feel really caught up, excited for VR, still hating Meta, and became actually excited to try out the new ASW 2.0 update, cuz the 1.0 had tons of issues. I saw that you're in the movie and chill discord server, so in that world, if i'm looking at the screen with a camera looking from inside a moving car trough a window, the moving image messes up ASW 1.0 and sometimes slaps the image out of the screen where the video is actually playing. I'm excited to see if this huge update managet to fix that, and also all the other stuff they did to the software in the past 4-6 weeks. (I didn't play much VR before i sent it in for repairs, so i'm out of date with Quest 2 software.) Question: How often did joysticks break for you and friends? And how do you repair the joysticks, stopping them from drifting like crazy? Anyways, much love, excited for this week's VR news, and have an awesome day! :)

My opinion is that VR is gonna go AR once glasses and indoor navigation/recognition gets good enough. Its the only feature that will drive mass adoption, a digital layer over the real world. After that, the refinement of AR and VR spaces will come.
