I am not in any way a linguist, but it appears to me that pronunciation is still pretty much an issue with many Singaporeans, even those who seem conversant with English. In many instances, the right words may be used to convey messages, but the emphasis placed on the syllables of certain words deviates from that in standard English, making the words sound foreign to those unfamiliar with the local accent. In a nutshell, effective communication entails picking the appropriate words in conversations, and saying them in a manner understandable to all without having to repeat ourselves.

Yu Boon Cheng Singaporeans who are locally educated or even some who had their higher education in US or UK do have pronunciation issues, because it is imbued. Unless they had spent a considerate amount of time in US or UK living and working in that environment, you will always hear funny pronunciation of the same word that you may hear from people in China or Hongkong as an example. Its the influence of the imbued accent that caused thus anomaly. Even this panelist had the same issues including the moderator.Singaporeans also have a funny way of using or speaking grammatically incorrect sentence structure which make no sense to native English speakers. BTW, I am Singaporean and I agreed with your point of view.

It’s the crab in the bag mentality. Whenever a singaporean speaks with an international accent, their surrounding singaporean peers judges them for being different , mostly due to jealously. Get out of this country

John Chua Singaporeans who are locally educated are usually more concerned about acquiring technical knowledge for passing exams. Communication skills, including proper word enunciation and sentence formation, are often overlooked. I had my tertiary education in Australia and undertook a unit on communication during the course of my study. The unit touched on the basics, such as grammar and sentence structures, and other essentials for effective communication. Though it was a breeze for me, it made me rediscover the technicalities that I had overlooked during my years of education in Singapore, and enhanced my appreciation of the benefits from grasping the basics and the beauty of the English language.
