I have recently got the Kindle Scribe. I also am a Kindle reader. But I'm also someone who enjoys writing for a hobby, and it has served me well so far. I very much enjoy using it. The note taking/writing aspect on the Kindle Scribe feels great! The pen to "paper" feel is amazing and satisfying. Never thought I'd ever say that as I've always been the old skool pen to paper kind of gal. But this is great. No paper or pen waste! I can relax and read books whenever and then if I want to write some thoughts or whatever notes, I can do that too on the same device. I could do that with my tablet, which is what made me a little apprehensive at first, I can do all of that on my Samsung Tablet but I wanted something with no distractions. I get distracted quite easily. On this device, no pop ups. Just full focus on myself. I have depression and anxiety, but this helps me not feel overwhelmed and just think of my own enjoyment. :) For my personal experience for a casual user, I can definitely say, Kindle Scribe is a great device. I have never used Remarkable 2. But I can attest to the Kindle Scribe!

If you're not familiar with it, look up malacular degeneration. It's an irreversible condition caused by screen and monitor back lights. Your eyes get badly affected and your vision seriously deteriorates. But if youre not directly staring into the light, you're safe. So, using say an overhead light or a desk lamp on say a book or an R2 would protect you. That's why although it is inconvenient at times, in the round, I support the R2 not having this option. Cases of malacular degeneration are expected to rocket.

Thanks for the in-depth review. As a reMarkable 2 user, I'm very pleased about the latest firmware that enables unlimited canvas size by just zooming out with fingers, and also the capabilities of Google / OneDrive integrations etc. I also use the cut-and-paste, then move and resize the pasted contents a lot to organize my thoughts in the right sequence. It's truly focused on creating the best note-taking experience, and the team there keeps on adding new features in every release... just to justify the need to pay them a monthly fee by new users. Comparatively, if you consume a lot of eBooks in the Kindle ecosystem (I do own a Kindle Oasis), rely on their tools (translation, sticky notes, and see what others have highlighted in the same book etc.), and you also want a larger screen to consume A4-size contents like magazines, with fairly occasional note-taking capabilities, Kindle Scribe would be a device for you. However, Kindle Scribe would be a heavier device than reMarkable 2 and so bear in mind its portability and whether its large screen and weight may put you off when using it as a eBook reader... just like whether you like holding a larger book to read all the time. Comparatively, reMarkable 2 has slightly taller layout and lighter weight, its usable screen size is slightly smaller than an A4 paper which makes it perfect for note-taking in meetings as most of the time you put it down and use it on a flat surface. Kindle Scribe may not fall short in that regards and could still be a good note-taking tool; just that if you are a heavy note-taker (e.g. you have a lot of business meetings to attend etc.), you will definitely appreciate the vast variety of tools and the distraction-free experience that reMarkable has to offer. So after all, it all depends on your usage and priority on which one suits you better. It's not apple-to-apple comparison as both devices focus on slightly different market segments.

To summarize: - You want to make notes (not on books): Remarkable - You want notes on books?: Kindle - You want to read books?: Kindle, but probably the smaller versions would be better coz you can hold them with one hand - You already have a kindle and just want note-taking?: Remarkable. I dont think it's worth spending another 300-600$ to buy another kindle just to take notes with a pencil on a much bigger device that you can't hold with your one hand.

The Scribe is now the best Kindle book/ Audible reader/player with an added decent note/drawing ability, the Remarkable is an ok ePub reader, crucially missing the Kindle and Audible ecosystem but it is a superior drawing and note taker. The Remarkable was designed to remove all distractions and replace a notepad or a sketchpad.

I think the only Main thing that the Scribe is missing, is Handwriting recognition... so, you can search notes. Other than that...I don't think pressure sensitivity or tilt is important for the Scribe. I think they are selling this as a large e-reader with a built-in note pad.

Thank you for the comparison. Been following your reviews for many years. Still hoping e-ink will have its 'break out moment' Ordered a scribe when it was announced. My take away here is - So the scribe is large ebook reader with +some+ note taking options and the remarkable is a large note taking device with +some+ ebook reader features. I guess the decision comes down to which of the dominant features is your main requirement.

@@bluein2red423 that is interesting. I was put off by the price of the first remarkable. Even used here they were €700 a couple of years ago. I nearly pulled the trigger on the rm2 when they seemed more reasonably priced. But then when you add the marker, case etc it started getting pricey for just note taking . Had I dug more into it and found out about the ecosystem (although am I right that the root acces is more recent?) then I may have bought one, I am a linux boy after all. However I do feel that the scribe being an ereader means I will get more utility from it. I have so many paper notebooks that iwm convinced one day I will write in!

So, specifically about the note-taking features, I'm imagining that Amazon's Kindle team see reMarkable 2 and Kobo Elipsa as the primary competitors to Kindle Scribe, which would also give me an idea of the next features they'd implement in the next firmware updates, but at the same time, they'd likely roll them out alongside bug fix updates for the other currently supported models. I'm also surprised that reMarkable 2 pen tilt works with third-party pens.

If I’m hearing right, it’s a very good large screen ereader but falls short in the note taking category. The Remarkable 2 is the by far better device for that. So as usual, pick the device that meets your need. The really only great advance is the 300 ppi, a first in that size screen.

@@ch3ckm8 Except Amazon has no motivation to further develop their note-taking software beyond just a quick note-pad rather than a full-blown notebook system like Remarkable has. They aren't trying to sell it as a notebook, they're selling it as an E-Reader that can take a few notes and write in your books to sell their Kindle service. I was given a replacement with no extra fees so I was happy about that. FYI - you don't have to pay to use the original Remarkable 2 features anymore (e.g. send to email, convert to text, etc). Those are all now available without any subscription. The Kindle Scribe honestly reminds me a lot of the Kobo Elipsa - an excellent large-screen eReader with frankly subpar writing capabilities. If you're looking for a proper eink writing tablet where you can organize notebooks, have a file structure, copy & paste text and images, layer with templates and do basically whatever you want with the content that you draw, you're going to want a dedicated writer and not an ereader. The Kobo Elipsa kind of flopped and I suspect this will too.

I have to say hats off to Amazon for this device. I'm switching from my Remarkable Mark 1 to this. I held off from buying the Remarkable 2 as it could not use Kindle. The only missing killer feature from that device. Also it usually makes sense to skip one generation between upgrades so they will lose my sale this time. I would buy the Remarkable 3 eventually provided they really beef it up, speed it up and give us even more advanced drawing ability. (It is already the industry best) and I can't wait to see what they do next. If they can move Remarkable to Linux and just make the OS they use now a Linux app then that would be something...we could then use thousands of Linux apps as well as KINDLE. Then they would beat the Scribe.

I think the biggest "problem" for the Kindle Scribe is keeping the ecossystem closed, this could delay some implementations because they want to make their way and not the way that already exists, like the time they took to accept epub on the kindle mail. I live in Brazil and the only device that I can buy here with warranty is the Kindle, I like the device and if they launch the Scribe here and I have the money by the time, I would buy the device, but these proprietary things pisses me off sometimes.

Thank you for the review! I struggle to see the Niche where the scribe fits in. Part of the joys of a kindle ereader is the small form factor and portability. Yes, the scribe still has an e-ink display, but a basic iPad with a “paper like” screen protector is far more functional for note taking and even drawing/designing and is similar in price to a scribe. I would have to try a scribe out for free to see if I like it more or less than an iPad which performs the same and more function.

I don't mind greatly having to convert reading material to PDF to read it on the R2. No back light isn't a deal killer either, it's bad for the eyes. But the actual on the screen reading experience, has to be right up there with the best, at this price point. Being a great note taker with a merely okay reading experience, just doesn't cut it for the money.

As far as I'm concerned the very least I expect of a digital notebook is being able to rearrange notes (cut/paste/move regions), which is one of their biggest advantages over paper. If you want to draw, you do it on devices like an iPad. You use e-ink devices to read, write, take notes, etc. And the Scribe is good enough. Now you add the Amazon ecosystem, Kindle books, etc. means again the Remarkable is done. At most it will just be a niche player

Imagine if Amazon and Remarkable worked together on a device...wow! Perhaps Amazon should buy Remarkable out and then offer a few of these. Perhaps A5 (half current size), A4 (current size) and A3 (double current size). They could do 2 models in each size, standard and pro. The standard would be like the scribe, and the pro could add the Remarkable's advanced sketching and drawing tech as well as the Remarkables more evolved feature set. That would be the ultimate version of this device.

Amazon buying Remarkable is a terrible idea. Amazon is a giant company, and they aren't selling the Kindle scribe to be a note taking device, they're selling it to sell their Kindle service. They really have no motivation to improve note-taking, because they aren't even trying to compete with Remarkable. The way these things are priced, I'm certain Amazon is losing money with these devices, E-Ink technology is expensive. Same way Xbox and Playstation lose money on their consoles, they make back with subscriptions.

The Supernote A5X / A5X2 is vastly superior than the Remarkable 2 as a note taker, usability, tools, notes management etc.

Wait!!! A monthly fee. That’s a deal breaker especially with the new Remarkable Pro (colour)

Althouth I applaud Kindle for creating such a device, it is, a note taking device for people who want a Kindle... having owned a Boox for 2 years now, I don't see myself going back to the Kindle OS

Yes, I don't pay the monthly fee on a remarkable, just get something else. The e-reader landscape has changed, there's plenty of other options

My husband's kindle DX has gotten so that the batter doesn't last very long. So, when I saw this Kindle Scribe, I didn't even think . . . it's a lighted screen with 300 dpi . . . bought it immediately! Christmas for him is DONE! I'll see whether he likes the note taking, but for anyone that reads textbooks . . . this is a no brainer. I borrowed a remarkable from a friend for him to try, but he didn't like it because he couldn't access is Amazon Docs.
