Islam has basic tenets. For example in fasting, we start at a particular period and break at a particular period. No All day fasting or 24 hr fasting. This speaker is right, family is not a criteria for Iman position in Islam. Whether imam of Ogbomosho or elsewhere. However, there is this gentleman agreement from time immemorial in many towns and villages in Yoruba land to Honour families for religious positions. E.g. family A produce imam, family B produce Ladani(prayer caller), Family C produce Baba Adini, Family D produce Iya Sunna. The involvement of the Oba of town or Baale of village to present the Imam to the people or any other role the Oba or Baale plays in selection of the Imam is also HONORARY. It just to respect the Oba or Baale and encourage mutual cooperation of both Oba/Baale and the IMAM But, if the gentleman agreement is creating problems now, then we stick to the basic rule of Islam. Beautiful Sermon but the fundamental issue of the claim of the Ayilara family of being cheated out of their common heritage by a stranger not known to them was not addressed. The Supreme Court precedent refered to is distiguishable from the facts on ground which has nothing to do with any claim to ownership of the mosque by the Ayilara family. The gentleman should be advised to step down in the interest of Islam in Ogbomosho. Too many leaders of Islam in the town are seriously against him and he cannot keep fircing himself on them.
