I would guess that those old clubs all needed new grips! As a kid, I played with a totally mismatched set (each club a different manufacturer). My 5-iron, manufactured by Spalding and marked with George Knudson's name, had a grip that was so slippery and worn that on several occasions it flew right out of my hands. My Wilson Sam Snead "Blue Ridge" 4-iron was my favorite iron. I owned my mismatched set which was noteworthy due to the archaic inferiority of the clubs even then, from 1974-1977 and played to a 1-handicap as a senior in high school. And of course my woods (driver, 3-wood, 5-wood) were also fully mismatched persimmon head woods! I grew up poor having been raised by a single mom. Guess how I could afford my clubs? The club pro where I played told me I could take a full set out of the lost and found bin. He said some of these clubs had been there for 4-7 years or more.
