If you consider how long parrots live, their learning period is even longer than ours, so when you by a young parrot, it will pattern its noises and movements after yours, as you are performing the role of parent. This stretch could last ten years or more, like ours.

The reason why parrots imitate our language is a form of self-defense, the idea is that it tries to deceive us (the one who keeps it captive), that we will think that since the bird sounds the same as us, thus must be one of our own and let free. When that doesn't work it starts imitating things it sees us consider important. To them, things like your alarm clock are just a weird looking stone that sometimes makes some very particular noises.
