I think and am sure I'm wrong in many ways. The way I define having a "chip on your shoulder" equates to being Jaded and or cynical to most things either experienced or knowledgeable about. I'll be polite with an absolute understanding yet I might have a chip on my shoulder due to previous experience. It's like being Jaded or Obtuse to anything new that doesn't work or fit your own opinions or research/time invested. I think to define it as simply a grievance to anything is to misrepresent the full meaning and usage of the term
