One of my absolute favourite bands of the 80's. They were massive back then and brought back some soul and funk to pop that was missing in the midst of all the synth-heavy stuff being churned out. Topped off by a frontman with a fantastic voice. Fucking hell, that lad could sing!

What an encouraging story. Most of us have our dark shadows that last a short time or not so short time. I'm glad he made it through. I hope he's mended his relationships with the folks in his life that he hurt. But as for Wet Wet Wet, back then I was NOT a pop guy. I was a hardcore soldier, traveling to exotic places (dumps was more like it) outside the US back then and was into rock, metal, and punk. Pop always was the girls genre. That said, he had (still does) an amazing voice and that one song "Love Is All Around" song... Yeah I knocked some boots to that song, there was something about it. It reminded me of music back in Ritchie Valens time. Kind of crazy though, a few school mates form a band and blow the world wide open. I do wonder if there was some resentment because as the documentary said they wanted to be a punk band, but Marti's voice really led them someplace else. Just curious.

It was the four guys who started the band and then Graeme Duffin, the guitarist, joined. He was a little bit older than the rest of the guys so it was probably due to image that he has always been known (amongst the fans) as the unofficial fifth member of the band.

The issue of band image can be quite detrimental to a band - even one with legitimate artistry - something the guys from Wet Wet Wet undoubtedly had. I'd first heard of Wet Wet Wet during the summer after 6th grade while visiting my uncle in London - and then two years later, they blew up in India (where I was living at the time) with "Love is all around'. No one cared about their image. Girls and guys and liked them. The music spoke for itself and there was no other marketing done for some of those Asian markets that were largely blind spots for some of the biggest acts in the US and the UK. It's a shame Wet Wet Wet never became a household name in the US (which is where I am now). Sadly, their rise to prominence coincided with America's growing isolation from the broader global pop scene in favor of a more geocentric bias. It is a shame Marti Pellow is no longer part of Wet Wet Wet despite some great songs that they released post their 2007 reunion. The band will never be the same without his voice.
