I love Project Mara Many of these are on my TBR and I will pick some up now. I love Anthony Horowitz and his book within a book trope. So ingenious

Fun approach to selecting a TBR.. but I would also burn out with that many mystery/thrillers in a row (unless I am whipping through a series).

I haven't watched the video yet but I just wanted to say I've been in a reading slump for the entirety of April and now the first few weeks of May. I think it's because I'm a little burnt out on reading and also just life stuff going on. Even with all of that I always look forward to your videos and all the effort you put in ♥ Thank you for everything and this video came at the perfect time for me ♥♥

Moonflower Murders was so good. He's become an auto-buy for me, and I'm definitely going to go through his backlist. Yes, everyone who compares Ruth Ware(and authors like her) to Agatha Christie I'm like you're sleeping 😴 on Horowitz (while he's Not Christie I do get more of those vibes from his stuff than many other's that actually get compared to her 🤷♀️). I did enjoy In My Dreams I Hold A Knife 🔪 too. Glad I passed on The Cartographers. It was giving me "literary fiction " vibes which is a hard pass for me. 😆 The Tea Master 🍵 and the Detective sounds delightful. Sherlock in Space, yes please. 🤣 Hastings-giving us the best sound effects. 🐈 Always ❤ the 😺 cameos.

I agree with Horowitz reminding me of Agatha Christie-- but i can't quite explain it. I think it's a combination of the voice and the reveals. I like Ruth Ware but I don't think her books are Agathaesque. Moonflower Murders is the only one (I think?) I haven't read-- but I did see the adaptation and LOVED it!

Yes, the labyrinth is a common motif found in Borges' works. Libraries too. The Name of the Rose has been on my TBR for a long time, but I've always been intimidated and haven't really worked up the nerve. Glad to hear that the authorial voice is fun and catty though! As to its popularity, I think there have been multiple screen adaptations? The most famous one is with Sean Connery. Maybe just the premise of murderous intrigue between monks is fun enough to hook people.
@bookslikewhoa2 жыл бұрын
Yeah it was a huge hit even before those adaptations so... idk, maybe people were just higher brow back in the 80s :D

Oh yay! I haven't read The Tea Master and the Detective yet but I've read and loved many other Aliette de Bodard books. The other books she has set in this universe are fantastic and definitely give more background on the mindships. I'll have to move this one up on my TBR after I finish her Dominion of the Fallen series.

I love that you praised Hastings for scratching on a scratch pad. My dad gets so exasperated with me because I always tell my kitties they're good babies for doing stuff like that and he just says "they're cats, they're not being good, they're just cats, they have no sense of right and wrong". How silly he is

I always compare the Magpie Murders series to watching an episode of the Father Brown TV series (with Mark Williams) and Midsomer Murders back-to-back! The Magpie Murders adaptation is different from the book - that sort of structure wouldn't really work for TV - but it's still great! At uni, we used parts of The Name of the Rose as an example for a medieval history seminar and it's surprisingly accurate! I also think the book is so popular simply because of the Sean Connery movie. I loved Farthing when I read it in 2019! And it completely delivered on the country house mystery front for me. But I haven't continued with the rest of the series because... of the world situation.

Curious how do you find Kathy Reichs? A graphic novel book series recommendation Netflix adapted Philippine series Trese based on female detective Alexandra Trese. Another suggestion not really a series yet but has a sequel Spanish translated The Red Queen and Black Wolf by Juan Gómez -Jurado along the lines of Millennium Trilogy but may not be to your taste as reminiscent of Scandi Noir -ish.Btw loved your video on Japanese Mysteries as I love Edogawa Rampo one of the few 'dated' and old fashioned writers I can tolerate. Chinese SF is definitely a thing.

Re: The Cartographers…I like getting curated fantasy picks from BOTM because fantasy is overwhelming as a genre and it veers off the rails pretty quickly for me. Basically I know that BOTM’s fantasy picks are often going to be the kind of light magical realism I enjoy. But lately I feel like they’re choosing any book with a speculative element or a touch of wizardry and sticking it in the fantasy slot. Basically at this point I’m very careful about their fantasy picks so I’m not surprised that The Cartographers didn’t deliver. (A ramble to avoid homework)

I suspect The Name of the Rose achieved bestseller status mainly on the strength of the film adaptation. I know a LOT of people bought the book back then and then realized it wasn't what they expected it to be and put it down. I caught a glimpse of Devil's Chew Toy on the gay mystery list. I assure you it's not a PI book. Rob calls it a "quozy." I thought it was a fun romp.

Just recently discovered your channel and am really enjoying your content. I am too new to suggest I “know” your reading taste, but based solely on your love for Agatha Christie I don’t think you’re going to like The Decagon House Murders. I am also a Christie devotee, and I was unbelievably let down by it. It’s being marketed as “for fans of And Then There Were None” but it suffers greatly from the comparison. I don’t want to spoil anything by going into detail, I will just say that I thought it was very two dimensional. I’m excited to hear what you think of it.
