@Gabriella Morris Bark of different plants (in this case trees) contain varying amounts of chemicals called tannins ... If they are heated and get into foods they can ruin the flavor making the food inedible 🤢 ... These tannins can however be used in tanning (hence the name) hides ...

It works really well to strain the eggs with your fingers. More of the white comes off and the yolks don't break on you from getting cut on the edge of the shell. 😊

Awesome, glad you found it helpful! I think alum gives you a nicer tan personally, but this is perfect if you only have 1 or 2 to do, just take the time on the stretching portion using eggs.

I see you flesh (scrape) the hide after you salt it. I tried this once, and my hide rotten and the hair slipped. I've had much more success fleshing the hide before salting. What's everyone else's opinion?

I've done both. If you hot hair slip and breakdown then it usually from salting to late after rivers start to disintegrate, or not salting with enough to retard the bacterial growth.

No, one good coating should be fine for indoor use, but you could repeat after a few years. Yes, it works on most hides.

• Does it have to be chicken eggs or can you use duck eggs? • Can you use natural soaps like liquid Castile? • Can you use a wringer (like an old fashioned wringer washer) to get the excess water out? • How do you clean them? Like if you turn them into a pillow or throw, because I'm guessing that you can't put them in the washer. Sorry for all the questions. Haha. 🙂

Yes you can use duck eggs, natural soap, and a wringer :) you can also throw them in the washer before you stretch, but not afterwards.you really shouldnt wash any furs after that process, but if you want a fur that can get wet you will need to smoke them after this process.

You have a beautiful family, and thanks for saving the rabbit hides. I worked for two years I guess from 1978 to 1980 maybe 80 to 82 some where there about. A company called Dakota Fur and Metal. The winter time work was all hides, Coyote, Badger, Fox, Racoon, Muskrat, Beaver and in the summer time we would take in cow hides. The cow hides would be stacked in a tin shed all hair side down layered all over the floor and I would have to cut off tails and any excess fat then salt them come fall time they would be rolled up hair side out and wait for freezing conditions and then sold (the hair side in this case was not important.). North Dakota where I live freezes almost every night starting end of Oct. But for the other hides they had a fleshing pole that and a knife that looked like a backwards draw knife. The fleshing pole was a pole about the size of a telephone pole not that long but that diameter and one end was on the floor and the other end was raised like you had it propped up on a saw horse, and the business end was shaped like and anvil round end only larger, you would slip you hides on that. They had boards actually coon brds, coyote brds etc for each animal these board kind of looked like small Ironing brds. The company also had a person to sew up the hides that had any fleshing mishaps. When done drying and I don't remember how long that took although I thing overnight, they would be turned inside out noses where the hardest and the starting point, the they had a big tumbler made out of lumber, it was about 8 feet in diameter and about 2-1/2 feet wide and had sawdust inside it and they would throw stanisole in there and the hides would come out of there looking like well........... great. really nice I always thought the Badger looked the nicest. But I being color blind I suppose its not the best. Take care Me

Hey! I have a quick question; when you condition the hide, do you *have* to use mink oil or can any conditioning oil work? I just started my process to tan, so I have a few days before I am at that step. I just wanted to clarify. I've never used mink oil, and I was thinking about some other oils we could use. This was really interesting. I have done a few rabbit hides with egg, some deer hide and sheep hide. But I never knew if these things would rot if they got wet. I stretched mine over a 2 by 4 held in between my knees. We don't raise rabbits for meat anymore, bc kiddo kept snuggling them.and then they would snuggle into your neck when it was "time". The family didn't like to eat them anyway. Now we have pigs and I was told tanned pig skin is the most wonderful leather.

If you use a sharp razor to just cut on the hide side only instead of using scissors you won’t lose as much fur. And yes, older hides are harder to do but the leather is a lot more sturdy and thicker.

I don’t miss that smell. My dad used to do this at the dining table. Made a real raccoon hat, rat snake hat band, and 2 rabbit furs for our doll beds 😂
