Probably because of Pete also being known as Pistol Pete in the old shorts. Probably a reference to that. PJ is Pete Jr., had to get another Pete connection somehow.

Goodness, cartoons used to look so good. But I was born after Disney & WB’s 80’s/90s TV renaissance; having grown up in the 2000s, all cartoons (even ones also by Disney) got so simplified compared to this and never really returned to this level of quality, both in animation and in voice acting.
