Goof Troop is a true gem! Used to play that all the time with my brother and when we would get stuck on a puzzle, we'd ask our mom to help. She loved it because her being able to help us with something on a video game was rare. Pausing the game and trying to use my finger to draw imaginary lines for where blocks would go when kicked is a lovely memory. Also I absolutely bought EVO for MAYBE 35 dollars several years ago. Insane how much the price has gone up!

Tonal shifts in songs, Bombing Mission (opening theme) from Final Fantasy VII. The shift from orchestral peak as it shines the title and the entirety of Midgar then the quick drop into the introduction of Avalanche and Cloud is *chef kiss* even if it's not Final Fantasy VI.

Dylan, the Blockade level in Jurassic Park Part 2 has exactly the kind of music you're asking about! It starts off as this very dark, broody piece, and then absolutely kicks into high gear around the 55 second mark. One of my favourite musical tracks/scores in the entire SNES library. As for the game, it's an okay (but hard-as-nails) run and gun title, best enjoyed with its only cheat code, infinite continues, and a second player. The music in that game is some of the absolute best of its kind on the SNES, composed by Dean Evans. I bought JP2 the first time I saw it for sale in a store because I accidentally stumbled onto the soundtrack on KZbin like 10-ish years ago and was blown away. It's one of the only games I can recall not named Super Turrican (1 or 2) to have Dolby 5.1 support. I'd kill to hear this game on a Dolby stereo setup (and Super Turrican, for that matter).

In terms of music with tonal shifts, Shining Force has a track that absolutely qualifies. The track known by fans as the "circus battle theme" has not just one, but two strong shifts from a tense chorus. Kinda short, but it slaps super hard. And I might as well also mention the boss theme from Secret of Mana. If you can last against a most daunting foe for a minute, the music shifts to make you feel like the beast no longer stands a chance. Good stuff!

Shining Force 2 was actually my first RPG game ever. I was so young and the concept of controlling multiple units on a field was so new that I couldn't get past the first battle. It stuck in my mind, though, and years later I returned to it and beat the whole thing, falling in love with the series and tracking down Shining Force 1 and Shining in the Darkness as well. I love that series. I still need to play Shining Force 3 and Shining Force CD.

Goof Troop is still one of my favorite SNES games and the only video game my mom has ever beaten. MUSHA on Genesis had a number of moments like Dylan was talking about, because the music is (sometimes) composed directly to the onscreen action, like a movie. Particularly a great moment in Level 5 where a miniboss shows up and the music segues organically straight into a boss theme. Not to mention that it's one of the all-time great Genesis soundtracks anyway.

For tonal shifts in music, the one that sticks in my mind is during the "New York Disaster: stage of Hydro Thunder. For most of the stage, it's sort of epic, slightly ominous, background music but, once you're nearing the end of the subway tunnels towards the end of the level, it briefly slips to a sad piano soundalike version of "New York, New York" for a couple of bars. It's slightly different from "New York, New York" for obvious copyright reasons but you can easily tell what the soundalike is supposed to be if you know what "New York, New York" sounds like.

Every time I see E.V.O. show up, it reminds me of a really strange Gamecube game that I only remember playing once (because, as these stories always go, it belonged to a friend, and they later traded or sold it). A game with a world full of polygonal animals eating each other and evolving to survive. Cubivore was a really weird game, and the most I remember from it was dying when a bigger cube monster just started tearing off my weird legs. It forever reminds me that the Gamecube era of Nintendo went wild with many of its concepts

You forgot to mention that Goof Troop is something of a spiritual sequel to Pirate Ship Higemaru, an earlier Capcom arcade game that saw a sequel on Famicom as "Higemaru Makaijima: Nanatsu no Shima Daibouken" which almost saw an English release as "Makai Island". I'm not sure if Goof Troop was actually _meant_ to be a Higemaru sequel, but that does explain the seemingly out-of-place pirate theme.

I was never into strategy games, _especially_ as a kid, but let me tell you, Shining Force was just magical. Maybe it doesnt live up to more modern strategy games, but i can easily say it roped me in good. It probably helped that i first played it on a relative's system, where they had a file farther in with much bigger battles. Its been a _long_ time but i do seem to remember it starts off somewhat slow, but i have the most fond memories of the later parts of the game. HIGHLY recommend it, even for non strategy fans.

I love the town exploration of Shining Force so much! It was my first strategy rpg and I've always been disappointed that it didn't become the standard for the genre since it helps break up the battles. I think 2 and especially 3 are the better games in the series.

For dynamic music changes, the x-wing and tie fighter simulation on DOS did it well. The system changed the music seamlessly and dynamically depending on what’s going on. When you’re traversing or scouting, it’s background. When you get into combat, it dynamically shifts to Star Wars battle themes. All with great chip tune renditions of the John Williams originals. When you’re in distress or the mission starts going to shit it shifts again. Absolutely excellent games overall.

What I loved about it, for it's time, was I had played Military Madness on Turbografx (I still love that game to this day). I had also played Final Fantasy on NES. In response to Editor Dylan's question, I dunno if it counts as particularly spoiler-y, but Dragon Quest Builders 2 yanks back the curtain on it's final major new mechanic over the first game's in GRAND fashion, once your NPC friends gain the ability to build blueprints you leave out for them, and they swarm over the area like Pikmin on a mission, the music, previously somber and dire, changes to a grand, sweeping swell, indicating that everyone has once again found the strength to carry on when things are looking their bleakest... *and it's still only the first chapter of the game.* and while you still have plenty of protagonist-only things to take care of, the indication that the previously mostly-useless NPCs have now made a huge leap forward is breathtaking.

Speaking of Strike Eagle II and its music change, Plok! had something similar with its absolutely bonkers boss-fight music. It starts out intimidating and spooky, then ramps up at 20 seconds, but at 30 seconds Tim Follin pushes the SNES soundchip to its ABSOLUTE. FUCKING. LIMIT. It's like being hit in the head with a gold brick wrapped in lemon slices. Plok!'s boss theme goes from "the skeleton appears" to "Plok goes on a coke-fuelled rampage against Russian mobsters" in the space of 30 seconds. It makes me wonder if Carpenter Brut took pointers from the Follin Brothers at some point. Anyways, that's something for y'alls to look forward in September. Though you can get a taste early if you watch Nitro Rad's video on it, which has a brief live-action bit that matches how Brut-al that track feels.

Xenoblade 3's DLC, Future Redeemed has a pretty great tonal shift in the soundtrack. At least two. One's the final boss theme so I won't spoil that, but before that is Prison Island's night theme. It starts slow and cold, pretty much the same theme as the Black Mountains theme just before it, but a ways in, and you get this badass guitar part. While the DLC takes place before the main game, the vibe of the whole theme tells you that this is it, the final open area, the end of a 13-year long trilogy, and I adore it

While I do agree with your assessment of EVO overall, for me its one of the rare games where the scenario, the world and the ideas it explores more than make up for the weaker gameplay. Embodying this entity that journeys through deep time and incarnates during key eras is a fascinating set up. You get to see the individual struggles of life throughout history and explore a bigger picture behind the scenes through the Gaia plot. This is EXACTLY the sort of game some modern indie studio should be r̶i̶p̶p̶i̶n̶g̶ ̶o̶f̶f̶ taking inspiration from.

You know, I had never thought about it, but the tonal shift in the music in stage 1 in Castlevania or in some last boss fights is awesome!

EVO was such an awesome game. I’ve replayed it at least three times over the last 30 years and I think it still holds up. Yes, it’s absolutely a grinding mechanism but it’s a fun grind and the concept of evolving is a nice feedback loop.

I enjoyed playing the Goof Troop game as a kid (even during the times that my cousin would "accidently hit me with a puzzle piece". It was ok though because I would return the favor, lol). And to Editor Dylan.......I know what you mean. I get that same feeling when I listen to the first stage of Megaman X 1 or the first stage in Sparkster for the SNES.

Even if you don't think the gameplay holds up the music for Shining Force 1 and 2 is amazing. I have so many of the themes in a playlist that I still listen to over 20 years later. The circus battle theme for 1 and the Elven village/Mitula theme for 2 are probably the most well known, especially since the latter showed up in a semi-recent Sonic.exe fangame. You should absolutely play Shining Force!! I first played it on a Sega Greatest Hits CD-ROM for PC, and I played the crap out of it!

Gotta say, that Strike Force II music reminds me a lot of the Desert Strike title/menu music.

I loved EVO Search For Eden. It was one of the earliest RPGs I ever played. Been loving this series, glad to see you and your team keeping up with it! This series is another step for game preservation by having readily available historical information on game releases

I've never really cared for Shining in the Darkness but, I love the 2 Shining Force games on Genesis. I've played through them multiple times over the years.
