Quark has chains that you can craft and then use to craft armour, Oh, the Biomes You'll Go lets you craft Chain Plating out of iron nuggets that you can then use to craft chainmail armour and Tetra has, among its materials, Flex Mesh, which can be used to craft the armour. But for something more vanilla-compliant, the Recipes+ mod lets you craft chainmail armour using a mix of iron ingots and iron nuggets.
