Two things that I suspect are true about why the sound system video didn't perform as well: 1. Quality audio doesn't penetrate as well when most people are completely fine with the quality of sound generated by the TV they have. 2. Most people are viewing this type of video on a mobile device with compressed audio in a compromised audio situation where they can't tell the difference in sound quality for themselves.
@fujinshu29 күн бұрын
That video is definitely a good reason to upgrade FP.
@nickd793529 күн бұрын
Personally, I dont think it had anything to do with your point 2. They've done videos in the past about audio equipment that performed perfectly well. I think the issue was the combination of a weaker core interest in audio as a topic (your point 1) *and* very disjointed/poor storytelling. It felt very rushed like they had 8 different talking points to hit instead of the standard like 2-3 they have in a video. That left no time to provide breathing room for each segment of the video. They just showed a piece of equipment in an A roll shot, said "and then we did this", and then moved on x 50. The channel lately has been pretty good about having a solid backbone of storytelling if the core topic isn't as interesting, but this one lacked both areas.

13:36 Veritasium has a good video on that, but Technology Connections has a good point about the whole thing too. The conspiracy was probably largely out of greed, but there are also physical reasons to make bulbs not last forever. Mainly, to get even halfway decent efficiency (as much as is possible with incandescent ever) you need to run the filament hot, and running the filament hot means it'll eventually wear out due to tungsten evaporation, which WILL happen even if you run the filament cooler, but will happen faster the closer to the melting point of tungsten you get. You can make them last longer by making the filament thicker, but that also means you need more power to get it to be bright, again hurting efficiency. So your options are to run them cooler (less light less efficiently, and warmer color temperature) or you make the filaments thick (less efficient, i.e. more power for the same amount of light at the same color temperature). It was always going to be a balancing act between longevity, brightness and efficiency, and also color temperature (running the filament cooler tends to make the color of the light warmer), and around 1000-2000 hours is where the math more or less evens out. Even after the cartel was disbanded, and up until today, 1000-2000 hours or so is how long incandescent light bulbs tend to last. You can get specific long light bulbs too, but they're dimmer for the same amount of power draw, for reasons discussed before.
@masoodjalal115216 күн бұрын
I think there is also a weird economic reason behing it as well. The corning which makes the gorilla glass displays for the phones was a East German company which was tasked by the government to make unbreakable glass for export reasons. The company made it and it became popular, they sold them in huge quantities and they were everywhere in the Warsaw Pact block including the USSR. But the problem is those glasses didnt break so there was no reason for people to buy ones and their orders declined and the countries could not buy it anymore as there was no need. The company went out of business. Fast forward, the company was revived and it saw a market in the smartphone industry.
@jubuttib16 күн бұрын
@masoodjalal1152 You have a mixture of facts there. I do remember the video about Superfest glasses, but Corning is and always was an American company, founded in the 1800s originally as Bay State Glass, later Corning Glass Works, and finally just Corning Inc. They've been making ion exchange toughened glass products since the 1960s, before Superfest was a thing. There is of course a business case for not making infinitely durable stuff, which kinda sucks from an environmental point of view. Fwiw I'm not sure Corning's main business is making gorilla glass, they're also a major player in fiber optics etc.

Just went through the surround system video again. This is just my thought on what the problem might be. I don't think the issue is with the "FB Market dumpster dive" videos, I think a lot of people are interested in those. I think the issue is in the reproducability. When people say "I won't be able to find this exact system", I think what they're really trying to get at is that they don't really know what to look for. A lot of the video is showcasing the unit(s) you bought, and how to set them up, but there isn't a lot of showing us HOW to find them. A section on your thought process I think would go a long way. Something like "We found this old Sony system, but you can see it has *these* connectors, which aren't in use with any speakers nowadays, so if you find something like that, it's safer not to go for them" would go a long way to show people what to look for. Or "If you look at system A, you can see it has these useful features that system B doesn't have" and showing a side by side comparison of the shopping process, or something along those lines would make people feel a lot more in the know about what to look for and what to avoid when looking at used gear themselves. TL;DR Since a lot of people don't have the money to just go on even a used market to try stuff out and see what works, I think they want a list of white flags and red flags to look out for and actually *how* to shop and what they can ignore and what should jump out at them. Since those kind of videos often start with the item already having been purchased, we miss out on that a lot of the time. Just my 2 cents.
@420310529 күн бұрын
All the examples you gave is not how audio works though. Basically you have to look at reviews of the thing you are considering buying. The price it was new might give you a quick starting point to see if it's worth researching. That's about it.
@Yorpy3229 күн бұрын
I came here to post basically this. The video should have been LTT buying a selection of what was available on marketplace, maybe even blindly or randomly, getting them all and then going through each one highlighting why it might be a good or bad choice from a feature perspective, no need to state brand/model. e.g. "This one is good because it's new enough to have HDMI x.x, which means you can .... Even though it only has 5.1 outputs and no Dolby , it's okay because the content most users watch is ...." Don't detail the product you got; compare and contrast what features are typically available and matter in the budget.
@combatwombat59429 күн бұрын
I mean they literally do that in the videos lol That's why the explained about the amps and not having HDMI. They talked about different connectors on different setups, and why which ones can be better than others, and why they were using the ones they were. Could it be a bit more detailed? Maybe, but they certainly do explain they're thought process
@Misaka1003228 күн бұрын
@@combatwombat594 My point on that is that they skip the most important part. They basically say "So after searching and research, we came to these options because of XYZ". This would be great if everyone could find that same XYZ, but if they can't and they know nothing about audio a section on their research methodology would be super helpful. I basically just think that them going "We did the hard part already and skipped it but heres a few sentences about what we came up with" isn't as valuable as a dedicated section would be.

Sometimes in life, you need to read something about what you are interested in accomplishing, so you understand at least an intermediate or introductory level of the necessary information required to be an independent human being rather than having someone hold your hand and tell you exactly what to do in all aspects of your life.... Especially if its something like the videos focus, which is effectively hooking a system of speakers together to an amplifier, when they wherent explicitly sold to you in a box with a warranty and a guarantee that everything would plug into each other and work without a second thought (Which is a widely available product)... At the end of the day, a speaker takes a positive and negative connection out of the powering amplifier... and there are calculators that you can use on the internet that will tell you how to effectively match rated impedance loads and wattage of an amplifier, to rated nominal impedance and wattage of a speaker. As I recall from the video Linus could have better discussed impedance matching and what rated wattage means on a speaker, including how those ratings are determined and the difference between RMS and Peak voltage handling. To allow people to better understand that, however it is pretty basic once you get down to the brass tacks.

Because like someone else said you only get three results relevant to your search, then some adjacently relevant, then some completely irrelevant, then your viewing history. I searched "Runescape" to see if it would pull up creators or videos I have watched, but nothing in there was relevant to what I have watched, or would watch. Aside from it spitting out my watch history (of WoW videos, not even Runescape). Useless.

The problem is that it's not a good implementation: The typical launchers don't replace the google search bar with that choice and the only point in being a search engine is that you choose which app you wan't to install but this just leaves out so many good options as a search engine is normally used within a browser and therefore "just" needs to be a website; not a fullfledged app. There should be a standard env variable or sth being handed over to all browsers.

@1:16:20 Most people just don't care about great audio for a home theater, because they have neither the space, money, time or patience to build one. I thought it was a good video, but I don't see how it would be relevant to a large viewership.

@LieutenantMoustache28 күн бұрын
It sort of shows what kind of bubble they live in that they think a lot of people will spend very important personal time shopping around for used audio hardware, travelling to pick it up from some random person and setting it all up. Most people don't have the luxury of having staff do all of that for them, they go to work and when they get home they want to relax; what is easier? Doing what they did in the video, or just clicking 'buy now' on one item with a single cable to connect?
@0wnz0rz88828 күн бұрын
I agree with you. LTT forgot their core audience are PC people, not a lot of us care about audio impedance (whatever that means). I understand it is still tech tips, but the channel was built with a certain expectation from the start. Audio stuff will have to be it's own channel. Imagine if Linus started cooking tips on this channel because of the tech he could use... that video would do terribly
@girder12328 күн бұрын
@@0wnz0rz888 I think there is some overlap between PC people and home theater enthusiasts - but if someone has enough space for a home theater and wants to build one, they'll likely have enough money to buy a nice system that perfectly fits that space. The intersection of people with low money, enough space, home theater enthusiasts and enough time is just very very small. That's also the reason why used audio components are so dirt cheap on marketplaces, there's just no huge demand for it.

I think the problem with the soundbar video comes down to "and then this happened" storytelling. It felt disconnected and messy because there wasn't quite enough connective tissue - How or why things were done. Our center channel sucks but let's replace our L/R first. Don't forget to pay attention to the type of connections. We swapped our fronts to the back now. What is happening? The narrative whiplash made it more difficult to learn the lessons the video was trying to teach us. I think the benefit of a 50/500/5000 style video is that it would force the lessons of each tier into more digestible segments; rather than the tech tips coming at you randomly from all angles.

It was visually confusing as well - the home theatre room is dark, you've got a bunch of black speakers & amps, Linus's highend speakers which the video isn't about are still there in most shots. I get that this makes it easier to test but clearer product/setup shots on the light coloured build benches in the main studio could have gone a long way here even with the narrative issues (mixing and matching parts really didn't help)
@firstname56529 күн бұрын
For me the video seemed pretty mid/weak because it was essentially "Did you know you can buy old used shit for cheap?"... Which yes, I do know that. To be fair I wasnt paying that much attention after it became clear what the video was about.

@@TimSheehan Using the build benches or even one of the studio sets to give a more realistic view on how the setup looks and scales when progressing from a simple soundbar to the end setup they achieved. I built a cat poop box under my stairs. I built a box around a cabinet drawer, a top that hinged open, sealed up the corners/edges, put a cat door in the cabinet drawer front, and fit it all into the wall through a frame. You change the litter by pulling the drawer out of the wall and access everything through the hinged top. I ran an exhaust fan through a charcoal air filter with a 24/7 low voltage fan, through the stairwell wall into my server closet. The charcoal filter removes the smell. The cabinet drawer I used was for a recycle or trash can, so it's not all that large. If I were to do it again, I'd give my cat a little more room in there and use one of those big cabinet drawers for big pans and stuff.

Hey! Regarding the soundbar video, I watched it to the end, and I liked it, but I guess because I'm deep into audio myself. 1/ If you're a specialist (like Dan), you know that the audio market is all over the place with more scams than anything. 2/ If you're the everyday people, you cannot see nor hear the real hi-fi, professional or studio market. It's totally cloaked. 3/ Audition perception and audio tastes are totally irrational. I saw professional musicians using very expensive material very badly tuned. Eg: cutting all highs because they love the basses. 4/ Very few people really get your first seconds demonstration. For you, AV producers, and music lovers, it's obvious. But it's immediately forgotten by the general consumer. 5/ Surround sound is far more important for gamers than for any other population. So, how to do better? 1/ Better target your audience. If you're only talking to cheap gamers, show it or tell it. 2/ (Same) Choose if you want to be technical or practical. 3/ Give more options before the second hand mix-mash chasse. Eg: a good stereo set is better than a crappy surround; good all purpose speakers can have better low frequencies than some crappy subs. 4/ When you go DIY in audio, not only the impedance is to know, but also the wiring, the connectors, the DAC quality, the amps quality, the frequencies response and the phases. It's a lot. In the hope to help. Cheers!

I like how 0:30 I should expand on what I said last week then at 1:31: I can't expand on what was said last week. JUST SAY THAT IN THE DANG INTRO THEN. And I still know nothing. When I saw it last week I was like oh shit did Riley leave? That's actually crazy if so. You could absolutely say more. At the bear minimum say "We lost an employee and have to put these channels on hiatus because of it." You could even say a bit more with things like: things will be back to normal for these channels in a week. Or things will be back to normal with a new presenter. I can't comment on the details of the split at this time. If it was amicable you can say we lost an employee who has chosen to peruse other opportunities. You say nothing we will assume that it's bad blood between you and whomever left like or worse than that girl who should have never been hired on. Even saying has left due to mutual disagreements is better. Even if those mutual disagreements were employee didn't want to do their job so we fired them it's very all encompassing, but implies at least better than the mess that girl made on her way out. Edit: I did a bit of looking it was the head presenter for Mac address, He made a post on X about it. The channel probably wasn't profitable, there wasn't another open presenter position. Sucks that they couldn't find a space for him in another channel/department. Maybe something else was offered but would have been at a pay cut that Johnathan would have found unacceptable.

@@VonGeggry Or maybe its just that he can't by law as he says. Its one thing if an ex-employee says why they no longer work at a place but something else when the company says it as companies need to respect the employees privacy. They are also a private company so they can do layoffs in whatever fashion they want. As a fellow teacher - not every lesson lands and I definitely agree with the "messy" critiques. Honestly, Linus Tech Tips, one part I really liked about the stereo surround sound section was something simple: how you showcased using older tech with newer systems, like HDMI to optical. That kind of A-to-B-to-C problem-solving is right up my alley. Being in the lower-class bracket, I’ve always been about finding ways to make older tech work with newer features, and vice versa. For example, less than seven years ago, I was still using CRT TVs. I had a PlayStation 3 and eight other devices running through an 8x1 HDMI hub. From there, it went to an HDMI-to-RCA adapter, RCA to a coaxial 1x4 splitter for my TVs, and coaxial to USB video input for my PC. Most of those adapters were only about $20, except for the HDMI hub. Stuff like that-adapting old tech to work with modern systems-is the kind of content I love. That’s a tech tip. Showing how to make the best of what you’ve got, like modular metal shelves for cluttered spaces or converting a canopy bed frame into a single-room living space with curtains for privacy-that’s a tech tip. Or using the right adapters to turn your Android phone into a desktop mode setup for a full-functioning computer? Now that’s useful. The one I really loved was your “Become a KZbinr for Free” segment. That was pure gold. More of that, please. These practical, resourceful tips are the heart of what makes tech accessible for everyone. Take what you’ve got and maximize it-those are the tech tips we need!

@@dBJerry I also think there's a point here to... As I have often found in trying to warn people of the boes, and other consumer grade bottom shelf markups... There's a way to do it and there's a way to not do it... The worst way to do it is to insult them for it... If they're already reaching for that meridian MQA origami, or that thick chocolate dystopianly painful and soul siphoning mud of the boes inability to cross over in speakers or headphones... Because it's classy and it had 12 payment plans... Making them feel like an idiot isn't really a step in the right direction. And if you care enough to mock them for it maybe care enough to try to make the world a better place in the audio world. It's a dark and weird and creepy and extremely pedantic and rain dancing place.. But.. we don't have to be like at the Linux community... That said, internally, if I saw any one of you reaching for the boes... Shame them from the internet of course, as you would anyone that's spreading dangerous misinformation.
@JackWse29 күн бұрын
Lol The irony to that last part of course, this is why we don't have discourse and why this spreads out beyond it... That being said if you know what you're getting into with a Bose set, and you like that, I mean hell that's a thing that is a unique sound signature that I can't like actually be in the same room with... I have them in my car I had to unplug the trunk speakers, and man it's the weirdest equalizer of the three options you get in a GMC, I got it to work but like.. by default.. No, it's not like a normal no from like garbage candy headphones that gamers using whatnot.. and the headphones, that's like a no because it's it's bad for you or something I don't know.. But you know some people like that.. it's the most subjective thing you can possibly have an industry in. I'm just happy I'm not too far off the mark and I I like Sennheiser, that sound in me they go well I like it It liked me.. I don't have to go outside of that, although it is scary with the hole consumer facing business going away, but then that's what happens when you sell headphones that I bought in 2006 that are still kicking as good as the day I bought them if not better just you know cuz I've replaced the pads with you know more comfortable ones... Like yeah.. like i'll dd to the list if I need a different capability but like you know I'm good, the things that break I can fix and do so fairly easy... and it is a profile of a commercial product that actually fits me which is again rare and I'm lucky that way. I'm not lucky that way for anything else pretty much, so I paid for it... But like... Having objective conversations about audio equipment, yes there are some objective things, there are tears there are things that transcend that, and then there's the magic part where we pull monofilament crystals out of buttholes and stuff... And shave our CDs.. you know.. The closed door stuff..That can't be measured by science, unlike Bob's magical origami at meridian called MQA, which can objectively be measured as garbage with what it does to the higher ends.. which just might be a meridian thing because anytime I've ever had a knack tuned by them there's a set of tones that actually physically hurts my ears in the higher end.. Just sucks cuz honestly like everybody uses those sabre ess chips nowdays for anything resembling the mid to higher ends that has to do with a solution for computer of some kind it seems... Phones, sound cards etc, I feel like I got the last generation of sound blaster that still had one of theirs which I like, like the sennheisers it's it I like that sound, I don't like Bob's sound, and I think Bob is old enough that I don't think he should qualify to tune things or set a philosophy on that, and maybe you should rethink the origami thing, because that's insane.. like it's actually insane.. stop it Bob. But most of this is subjective even even like when you can measure something objectively, they subjectively like it, so like.. yeah like for me I never thought I'd be able to listen to things on my phone but you know I got used to it... But then you know there's there's certain things that show up that took that sound and and they made it into a dark and sadness in a in a not intentional music sort of way. There's lots of feelings that come up with that of course cuz it's like you don't want to see people wasting their money on this kind of nonsense but that's just what people do.. give them an Alexa, and you'll have people with multiple Alexas,.. like the amount of people that I hear talking to their Alexa.. they paid lots of money for that lol.. and they use it regularly.. and their echoes and all that stuff... It's sad, which adult children could make better choices sometimes about impulse control and stuff like that and educate themselves and as somebody that like didn't have a lot of money growing up I had to make very specific purchases and I tried to make that decision every time cuz I want to buy the right thing... And I get why they you want to smack him over the head but.. like... Spare the child, save the rod, and beat Alexa to death because at that point you're doing an intervention of the person that has the robot that sits in the room that records everything they say and does Doppler recordings... If everybody wasn't so buy happy, and if everybody in the specific associated community wasn't a prick about it, maybe we could actually improve things a little bit.. and like actually treat critical thinking and education about things as like a norm not like misery, that would certainly help for PC gaming as it's basically console gaming at this point, as in we don't get PC games and pretty much everybody plays them like consoles nowadays. That has long-lasting repercussions, it always has and always will and it's it's one of the reasons we can't have nice things or you know our entire hobby anymore in any shape or form that isn't some sort of weird offshoot of the generic corporateized product package that the console market exists for.

@ 1:16:20 I am gonna be honest, I clicked on the video, heard Facebook marketplace, and immediately thought "I know everything that's gonna happen". I probably didn't, but with the amount of Facebook marketplace videos you guys made, it felt like I did and that I didn't want to waste my time watching something I watched multiple times already.

Regarding the spoofing, I think it's a lost more common than you think, cause there's more websites than you'd think that literally just make their functionality break if your user agent is Firefox because "they don't want to support Firefox with issues and bugs" that work just fine in Firefox if you just tell it you're another platform. On my relatives' computers that I've helped setup, I have them using Firefox, but I installed the user agent switcher extension and set it to chrome all the time so I don't have to get called if a website is broken in that way. As far as the tips thing went, I thought the video was useful, I just didn't comment on the video. I think it'd be useful to have the 5/50/500 thing, but I also like the whole story style videos.

1:35 Linus reacting to our request (some nutter's demands) to know more about the hiatus relies seems to believe we all knew it had ANYTHING to do with people's employment and the termination thereof. You could have said the hiatus was due to staffing shortages/ project priorities/ staff availability.

Watching the segment on the home theater system video, I strongly agree with the comment about it being hard to follow. The moment you switched from "Here is the $50 dollar set up that we got and here's what is in it" to "With just adding these components to the $50 set up..." It became so hard to keep track of what parts were making what difference in your judgement of the improvements. Even with my ADHD, this was really difficult to keep track of the pace of this video. Sticking with the set ups grouped first, then trying to build a best mash up at the end would have been way easier to keep track of.

I think part of it is the clearly vast law difference between the USA and Canada. There is no such protection in the USA. Companies usually won’t say negative things about x employees because they don’t want sued, but there is no legal protection about it.

I want speaker setups for a computer, and the majority of equipment I see out there for sound requires a receiver, which I don't want to have to buy. All the speaker setups for PC seem... too basic. Is there dolby atmos type setups for PC?

EU Watcher here: Had I known it was accessible for me on Friday, I would also have watched it live. I had completely given up on watching the WAN show live and sometimes skipped the recorded sessions too as I had weekend plans. Australia+NZ is 30M people. Europe is more than 17 times that (500M+). Also while waking up on Friday Morning is not great, think about getting done with the work week a bit earlier 😉 Edit fixed the wrong population count on AUS+NZ

That Windows 365 Link is actually REALLY cool. As someone who works in IT, the price point is really compelling and could make Windows 365 cost competitive with buying users a dedicaed workstation. It's just a thinclient, yes, nothing particularly innovative except the native cloud VM integration with a local-UI experience. But as more organizations transition to cloud VDI, thinclients are becoming a hot commodity. I expect we'll see a "netbook" laptop version follow. Rebrand your opinion with "Now you CAN actually download more RAM" and it becomes a really compelling solution.

It's disgusting that a channel and company as massive as LMG cannot do their own timestamps. These podcast are literally unwatchable for alot of people without them and they do have the statistics to prove it, yet they refuse to do something so important to part of their business that brings in so much money.

1:14:00 honestly that video was so boring i could not watch it all the way through, thing is, you guys didn't do anything wrong, i just dong care about audio, i use headphones for everything and i don't have a home cinema, i would actually assume this is the case for most people, some do, but most probably don't, it's not so much about not liking tech tips, i am just not an audiophile, and if i was would probably not be looking at cheap gear to begin with, i think you guys targeted a hole in the audience accidentally, hope this doesnt make it so that you guys stop making videos like this

@SkyfighterZX29 күн бұрын
@@Fade_Modded im glad you did, but like i hinted, they did nothing wrong so either you find it boring or not depends a lot on your personal interest, i don't care a lot about speakers setups, so it was boring to me, but i can see it being cool for those you do, which might be your case, like i said, the video was not bad, just did not match ny interest which is ok and i feel is the reason it under performed,but its just speculation on my part
@Fade_Modded27 күн бұрын
@@SkyfighterZXyeah it definitely is a more segmented audience. I like when they do that tho because you might find a new hobby. Even when they do videos on things I don’t care about, I’ll start watching and if I don’t see myself caring I’ll leave. But I’m still glad they made the video for the most part.

Hey all. The mid show lecture/explanation about employment stuff was great. I do the exact same thing where I expect others to just read my mind and know what I mean, but you laying it all out there was really a pro move. 01:30 @Linus: Here is another take on the format of the soundbar video. You said you filmed at the house because it is convenient. The audience does not know that. House videos are basically vlogs. Like the tech upgrades. Come in, build some stuff, make a video. It is fun, but it is a vlog. So when the soundbar video is in the house that is what viewers automatically expect. So those wanting tech tips dont watch it. Those wanting vlogs might be lost on the tech. And yes, do multiple videos instead. I wont remember that a tech tip about some fiber standard was in a vlog video. Nor the title. It should be very cleary imo, what tech tips a video contains so I can revisit and find them again later. So do the vlog thing and mention a tech tip/ topic. Then do a follow up with only that topic and a 5 min deep dive on the one issue. People want the tech tips. They just dont want to have to hunt for them inside long videos with non tech elements.
