It's a real shame you cannot rotate png, this is forcing me to use an SVG path.

You can actually utilize a trick to rotate images as well :) You will need to use canvas (in javascript), then add the image on it and then rotate the canvas end export as base64 encoded string, that you can then use as the marker icon :) The same tactic can be applied to svg paths as well to improve performance :)
