@@branleeharris the pre-order trade-ins are tempting, they're offering me $800 for my Fold3 which would buy-out the lease from tmobile and put me about $5 cheaper monthly on the finance charge for the device. tmobile offered $300 for the device but still wants their $800 upgrading through them. Pixel fold looks pretty good, but it's their first foldable and i'm worried there may be issues so if I go for it i'll have to get the coverage.

Yup. End of summer it'll be below $1,500 and carriers always have deals ... Seems to good to be true, but every 2 years I trade in my phone (usually a Pixel or iPhone) and pay next to nothing ... Verizon gave me $800 last year for a 2 year old iphone (with scratches). Last time I paid full retail for a phone was the Nexus 4.

I bet that app bar is the pixel "suggestion bar" thing that's on my pixel 6. It's a cool concept that I'm not a huge fan of and I can see others feeling the same. Essentially it's a smart bar for a combo of your common apps, recent apps and ones that are used together often. However it means it's contents is always changing by design which means there's no muscle memory to train for the apps in it. You just have to see if the one you want did pop up (and where on the bar) and go to it

As a Galaxy Fold 3 owner, I am absolutely thrilled to see more competition in the folding phone space. Samsung's widespread availability of the Fold and Flip line gave it a de facto monopoly in many countries that didn't have access to the Oppo Find N2; more companies competing for foldable market share will help drive innovation up and prices down.

The thing I'm not happy about is/will be the increased fold friendly apps. It's great when an app is optimised for fold. It's fine when an app just scales sensibly, then the worst are the apps that need to completely restart for the new screen.

@@cartier2312 20 years ago in 2003, there were no smartphones. The iPhone 1 came out in 2007 at $599 for the 8GB storage option (equivalent of $876 today). Flip ahead to 2009, and Apple was selling the iPhone 3GS for $0.99... on a two-year contract with AT&T only, because for the first few years, service providers had to subsidise the cost of the handset. And a modern smartphone does literally everything you need, while the early smartphones were cool novelties. From the UI, the app dock looks _very_ similar to the one that's been on Pixels since the 4 - apps with rings are "recent" or "ones you usually use around now/in this location", apps without rings are fixed. If you drag an app from the drawer into a ringed spot it becomes fixed. If you empty a fixed spot it becomes a ringed spot

I really like the design of the Pixel Fold, and this is coming from a Fold 4 user (also had Fold 3). The shorter but wider front screen seems way more useful than the tall skinny one on the Fold 4, which to be clear is what I use most of the time. The big issue with the tall aspect ratio is that pages frequently get cut off on websites, so I have been wanting Samsung to widen the front display some more. I really like OneUI 5, so if the Pixel Fold turns out to be really good after people get their hands on it, I might switch.

I'm also concerned with build quality. The Pixel 7 Pro is decent, but I had better built phones before. I don't know how the moving parts will hold up. And then I heard very bad stories about warranty, at least here in Germany, for the Pixel, so I wouldn't give Google that much money for their first attempt. I wouldn't even consider it if it was half the price, not worth the potential hassle.

I mean it might get some traction in the US, just because the foldable market is literally just the Samsung Z fold, which it does fix one of the biggest problems I had with the Fold phones, which was an uncomfortably narrow outer screen, but on the flip side, the same processor and a smaller batter than the Pixel 7 Pro who's battery life is already pretty mediocre is really not inspiring much confidence personally I'm going to give this a pass, first to see if Google can actually leverage this to get more 3rd party app developers to better optimize their apps for android tablets and also to see how this pans out, big things being the battery and hinge mechanism, but who knows maybe when the Pixel Fold 2 (or whatever they end up calling it) comes out I'll be looking to pick one up

It's very solid for their 1st try. I definitely agree about the battery, as a 7P owner. I'm hoping the screen tech will be substantially more efficient. That's obviously the way they'd be able to offset the bit smaller battery with more screen area. Still, even with mid battery life, I would be interested anyway. @@djcrashtest2000 The form factor of the pixel fold wins over the Z folds. That in itself is a compelling factor to buy them. I had a Z fold 3 but ended up selling it due to the outer screen being too narrow. I am a person who is in the market for a foldable phone. Most of the time I will use the phone in it's closed state. So the outer screen must have the form factor of an actual phone before I can consider a foldable phone and currently in the western market the pixel fold seems to be the only phone to deliver on that.

I actually like bezles as seen in my username. Not only do they add legitimate structural integrity to the OLED and even glass but in my opinion they look better. Having this thing that's almost bezleless is weird. Just looks like a slab of glass with a screen plonked on the front, no character. And they all look the same and generic. Especially with a "folding" phone that plastic being folded back and forth thousands of times will slowly peel from the display without a proper structure. Now they're going back to waterfall displays. Imagine a bezle less phone with a curved screen. Oh the butter fingers would be happy.
