This is a very clear explanation. One thing I would recommend insisting -- because it is indeed so different from Excel -- is that you CANNOT TEST your protection, since, as the permitted user you can still edit ALL cells, and you have no warning when the cell is protected or not. That puzzled me for a while. I guess the solution to that is the "show protected cells" in the "view" menu. Now, your presentation was very good because, at one stage, you do mention very quickly that we -- as the permitted user -- can always edit any cells. That's when I got the answer to my headache! I had a same problem as you guys, and the way to solve that is super simple. Only one thing you need to is file>save as a google sheet. And you can see protect range in your data section.

How would you protect a dynamic range of empty cells? For example, I have a spreadsheet linked to a drop off form that auto populates into a queue (the spreadsheet). We currently have an issue with people constantly clicking in empty cells below the data which is getting edited unintentionally, which in turn breaks a lot of the elements we have in our queue. If I can protect those empty cells, in theory we could prevent the above data from becoming corrupted from co-worker neglect.

Thanks for this clear explanation, you saved me time. Although you should have started by saying that two philosophies are allowed : I mean to "protect all and add exceptions" or to "protect nothing and add exceptions". I was almost to zap at the beginning as to choose to protect nothing but only some ranges doesn't really fit in most of real life context. You could have add what happens when users do modify a protected cell through a Google Apps script, as I still don't clearly know under which account an Apps script is running when it is lauched by another user.

I'm putting a Workbook together using only cell functions, the script stuff is a little out of my league. The Workbook is intended to make and record estimates, invoices, and receipts. I also have a "Records" tab where I am trying to record/log a list of information from the the documents I create (Name, Tax Amounts, Dates, Totals, ect). In this tab are rows of cells pulling and reflecting data from a "Master" invoice making tab I've built to make these documents. My question is; Can I (Lock?) or (Stamp?) these row ranges in my Records tab? The problem I'm running into is when I clear the data from my "Master" invoice making tab, I lose the information on my "Records" log tab. I was hoping to "Protect" these ranges but it won't let me define as a "Range Name" or "Protect(ed) Range" (I'm not even sure this is what I want to do). I think it has something to do with these cells in the "Records" tab pulling from the "Master" invoice tab? Thank you in advance & for all the great videos!

The exception doesn't work in all cases. I'm doing the same thing as the author of the video, but even if I set protection for the certain sheet with an exception for a certain cell/range, no one else can edit those cells/ranges that should have had an exception set. I was trying to figure out what's the issue and why it doesn't work for me. The issue is, once I set "data verification" for a cell, that cell is automatically inaccessible to any other user (except for users that have edit rights). I wasn't able to figure out why it's not possible or how to go around it. It would be really helpful if this issue would be mentioned in the video. Google doesn't mention this anywhere as well (not even in responses to users trying to get help with this).

I know, it is a bit of time since the video was uploaded. But got the question from a friend, and when looking around, I found this video. But it is more a unique case. Because if you in a cell add a check-box, that can either be marked or unmarked. If you use this to lock it, would it then keep others from being able to mark it or does it only keep them from not being able to remove the check-box. Because the purpose would be to protect it, so people can't alter text and remove the check-boxes, but they should be able to mark the boxes. Is there a way to do that, or is it either locked or unlocked???

I have tried this on several sheets but the problem I have is when I "Share" it with someone, they are asked to request access permission before they can access the sheet. I wonder why they did not implement the "lock cells" functionality of Excel. I have to say that is a much better system. Having the ability to create a sheet where the users can tab from one fillable cell to the next, without having to tab through every cell in between. Even the protect function is much more cumbersome to utilize. Would much rather be able to Ctrl-select the cells I want to protect, right click and check the "protect" box ONCE, rather than adding range after range (especially since you can't protect non-contiguous ranges at the same time). COME ON GOOGLE!!!!!
