@@georgewahington Stock based compensation comes from FCF? I think Joel means that stock based compensation is added back to the operating cash flow thus increasing FCF. If you give 15bn in stock based compensation, it increases your OCF with 15bn thus your FCF...

As you should know the problem with GOOGL is the huge stock based compensation and the tremendous hiring of people.

Thats not the problem for Google. Every tech company gives use stock based compensations. The problem for Google is that Apple might create their own search engine. Will people really care and change their default search engine to Google if their phones comes with Safari and Apple search? Some will but the bigger group probably wouldnt even notice or care. Of course then Google would get to keep their 20 billion a year it is paying Apple right now.

How is google Revenue estimate for 2022 on 230M, they are already on 280M LTM and without any quarter of decrease in revenue, the only reason why eps is lower are margins, not decreasing revenue

Jimmy, what do you think about the possibility that Apple might be creating their own search engine, and put it as a default on Safari (that's 1,8 billion devices). Not sure if they will since Google pays them a lot and they might not want to get into that business since they want to have this ''privacy friendly'' name, but i'm curious what your perspective is on this.

@@uhsejackson3827 i did a lot of research on this and the risk is very small. First of all, Google is paying Apple like 15-20bn a year for them to use Google as the default search engine. So if Apple decides to make their own, they do already lose 20bn a year in revenue at first. Then they take the risk of how many will use Apple Search while not getting Googles 20bn a year anymore. Also on top of this, Apple is constantly talking about privacy. Going into the search engine business would kinda go against that and against their business as a whole. It definitely is a risk still but its not going to do that much harm to Google either I guess

I think the knock on Google is that their management is far too generous with their employees, especially when it comes to stock based compensation. As I understand it stock-based compensation is a silent killer for the shareholders.

All tech companies give huge stock based compensations. It's a silent killer when the company does not do buybacks at the same time since it dilutes the shares. Google does huge buybacks, so no worries there. The biggest worry for Google is Apple imo. If Apple creates a search engine and puts it on default on Safari, it could potentially lose Google 1,8 billion active devices. Sure, a lot of people can download an app from the Appstore or still put Google as default on Safari. But there will be hundreds of millions that wont even notice the change in search engine, don't care or simply love another Apple product.

it’s not a bad thing. If the stock is overvalued and they use stock to compensate, it’s much more cost effective. They can give out stock as compensation, then buy the shares back at a fraction of the cost when their stock price drops. If you’re currently a holder you may not like it as much, but if you’re trying to start a position it’s great.

The discount rate you use at 9% is quite generous. If you just consider what is the alternative rate you get from s&p, its about 10%. By taking specific stock risk, i would expect a higher discount rate.

I dont think it is the safest. If it were, Warren would have been buying it already. What bothers me is that it is said that Apple is developing their own search engine. If they put it as default on Safari, Google will lose 1-2 billion devices.. Sure, some will put Google as their default again. But most wont even notice if Apple plays it right. Some wont care. Some will even prefer Apple search.. Could be ugly

I read elsewhere that if you want to buy and hold for a while go with GOOGL as there isn't as much dilution (followed by buyback) but if you want to trade options such as selling covered calls go with GOOG as there is more options activity. As Jimmy said, there really isn't much difference so no reason to swap if you already bought one or the other.
