You can manage session for this. Create a helper function for this. Just add language dropdown to your site and when anyone choose from dropdown you just store that into session. After that in helper create a function with switch case , from there just get language code. Super easy !!

Thanks for this and I'll try it this evening; but I want to use it to translate the whole page i.e I wouldn't be able to identify which words to translate; is it workable?

You can use Google translator to covert full application.

How to translate the contents in a url like whatever I get in /en in English will be german in /de

In browser url you can't change. Or may be I don't know that. Directly you can't do that. You can manage link from database. When you are saving link you can set with your language and manage a reference table where you will manage all the links. This way you can achieve this. You need to implement customly.
