As part of our overall goal to make the web better for users, last year we announced a new project: to provide a community with Internet access more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have today. After a careful review, we're very happy to announce that we will build our ultra high-speed network in Kansas City, Kansas. We've signed a development agreement with the city, and we'll be working closely with local organizations, businesses and universities to bring a next-generation web experience to the community.
Thank you to every community and individual that submitted a response, joined a rally, starred in a KZbin video or otherwise participated.

This is amazing. Google is a leader in Information Technology solutions. I'm surprised that not that many people have watched this. As of, April 1, 2011 @ 2:27AM PDT, there have been only 1,288 views, with 48 comments, 42 likes and for some reason 1 dislike.

America is behind many countries in speed simply because the distances here are enormous. It is a five minute drive from my house to my grocery store here in Arizona. When I lived in Prague, same store was a two minute walk. What I am trying to say is that the operational costs are tenfold, so please don't impose it as a flaw.

It's actually something that is still up for debate. It depends on what you define as "The Internet" do you consider it to be the infrastructure, the protocols, or just the connection itself. It is widely thought to have been an international effort. Not just of a single person, or nation.

This is a genius move by Google as having full control of the Fiber network in Kansas and into other states is just a beginning in eventually becoming a world corporation. Too bad the earth is not going to last long enough for them to achieve that dream.

Just a small recommendation to Google and other companies in general who choose to host conferences like this one with amplified sound: Please, hire a sound engineer that knows how to trim in a live system. During the whole presentation, there's a very high risk for feedback loops, primarily depending on the rooms natural frequency response. Now, if I can hear that through KZbins compressed and LQ sound, is that really something a billion dollar corporation could take into account?

This is great as far as it goes, good for Kansas City :) But what about rural broadband coverage in Kansas? Not for Google to sort. The telcos won't do it by themselves either, experience would suggest. So what else is there but the FCC to make sure it happens?

What's retarded though is that most servers cannot provide content nearly fast enough to worry about speeds 100 times faster than the average. It's like putting an enormous showerhead on your shower and expecting to have a waterfall coming out. Just because you can *potentially* receive data at superhigh speeds doesn't mean that the content can be provided by other servers that quickly...unless you're requesting info from multiple servers at one time, then I could see this being useful.

Sweet more speed for streaming services... just wait till your internet connection is faster than your harddrive or SSD drives... than there would be no need to have large harddrives just have everything in cloud. Games, Movies, Music, all on demand at lower costs.

@heftigpro I'm not sure what kind of math this is you are practicing, but 1 Gigabit/s is equal to 1 Billion Bits and is 1/10th of a Gigabyte, which is equal to 10 Billion bits. Additionally, 1 Gigabit/s is equal to 1000 Mbits/s, which means that based on your "tested" scenario of 400 Mbits/s this Internet speed is still planned to be 2 1/2 times faster than the 400 Mbits/s you were mentioning.

I could order a gigabit internet today if I wanted to, but there is really no need for such a high speed today. I have 24meg and it works pretty much instantly. The only thing that would motivate higher speeds are if you download shitloads, but the average user won't need a gigabit today

granted her math is bad (by a factor of about 10), i think by 1200 texts, she is referring to sent/received as a total: A rather extensive study showed teens send roughly 3150 texts a month, and assuming an equal amount per day, that's 100 text messages sent (and roughly another 100 received) per day. That's 200 texts that aren't sent during ~8 hours of sleep, or during classes (maybe). So about 100 sent/received in the morning is more reasonable sounding. Would link study, but it won't fit.

Incorrect, a "Byte" is made up of exactly 8 "bits". So therefore in this case, an internet connect of 1 Gigabits per second, is the equivalent of 125 megabytes. (1000/8)

This is great news for pirates! Capitalism ftw, haha. The main reason normal people get high speed internet connections are to download movies and games fast, and we can never download them fast enough! The demand is high, and internet providers supply :D Ain't the system great? Only other reasons you would want a fast speed connection is if you run a server, which very few do lol. 1gb/s? That is insane, it will boost downloads around the world even tho its just in Kansas!

@scuster45 I don't think you will reach the 150 GB monthly cap at the speed of 250 kbps. By the way, when a client of mine was getting one 3rd of what he was paying for, I got him to call AT&T about this. They sent a technician shortly, and now he's getting most of what he's paying for. I understand that speeds may very, but providing 250 kbps on a 10 mbps plan is a crime. I think you should insist on a change (raise the speed or reduce the fee). Be on your side, scuster45!

lol not quite.... but definitely longer than the U.S. but that is to be expected with a country as large as the U.S. compared to a country as small as South Korea. It is much easier to implement new infrastructure in places with less land to cover.
